A/C Vent Update
I'd like to get some understanding of what it would take to convert the center and side dash vents in 78-85 911 to those of and 86-89.
Although I think there are other ways (bulkhead vent) to increase air flow, I like the factory solution in the later Carrera's. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Hugh |

Has this ever been done?

I have seen a few 70's cars with the conversion to late Carrera A/C vents, but don't know who did the work.

I would too, doesn't seem like it would be that difficult.
You can block off the bowtie bulkhead vent for more flow. (Take off bowtie, put a vitamin bottle cap over the round outlet and put the bowtie back on to hold it there). |

I believe (disclaimer) I read, when this question was asked before that there is some sheet metal cutting behind the dash that needs to be done, and trim that needs to be replaced. I know it needs to be done if you're upgrading the center vent (which would also require replacing the dash pad).
I'm guessing you are aware of the center and side Kuehl vents sold by Griffiths? http://www.griffiths.com/porsche/ac/911ac/index.html#Kuehlvent

Seems like one could at lest replace the side vents and see some reall gains in airflow. I would keep the center given the dash pad replacement costs.

One thing I recently did on my SC that seems to help is flipped the little side vents over - I noticed that they blow up and against the side windows in the stock position, and you can't direct the flow to the driver and passenger, but when put in upside down can be adjusted so that the airflow goes directly on the driver and passenger. They don't fit perfectly this way, but it really seems to help.

JBO, my little outside vents are adjustable, and can either blow toward outside or toward the driver.

tcar - mine would adjust somewhat with the little thing in the vent, but only enough to get the air blowing on the drivers left arm/side (same for passenger, except right side!). Mine do not adjust up and down, only side to side. Based on you being able to adjust yours to blow directly on you, I wonder if at some point someone put them on the wrong sides. I will change the sides and put them back in right side up and report back. I still think they will blow to high, but I will see.
