removing stubborn 71 E outer CV's from stub axle.
mine are really on there - don't think they've ever been off. Any tips?

Once you have the bolts all the way out, there are a pair of roll pins that hold the joint to the stub axle. Also in there is a paper gasket. I would take a soft mallet and gently whack the side of the joint to break it loose. If that doesn't work, you can force a screwdriver in next to the gasket, preferably on the outboard end, and GENTLY work the joint loose. Take care not to scratch the surfaces, though: you don't want to hack a huge gash in the stub axle that will fling grease out.
Persevere and whatever you do make sure the car is properly supported when you are working under it. |
thx John - headed for the screw driver now, 'tho I don't like it for obv reasons - "malleted" the hell out of it to no avail.

Make sure you have four paper gaskets from our host here for the reinstall. Don't forget to retorque a few days after the install, as the bolts WILL work loose.
