question on starter, lowering engine/tranny.

My starter still having problem after several things I tried. Gotta take it off. I tried several times before and couldn't success. Someone mentioned I can lower the tranny without lowering engine, but the shifter linkage need to be unbolted. What/where is the shifter linkage? I saw a rubber boot right at the front nose of the tranny. I there somethings in there I can unbolt off the tranny?
Anyone know the torque specs of the big/small tranny mount bolts, also engine mounts bolts?

there's a rubber boot on the driver side end of the trans, that when pulled forward, exposes the 13mm head of the set screw bolt. remove the bolt and work the shift rod forward and off of the trans selector shaft. be sure to support the trans before removing the two big trans mount bolts or it will fall on you. also loosen the two red flex heat hoses from the exchangers. keep an eye on everything still connected while you slowly lower it maybe 3" or so. just enough to allow you to get tools on the top nut.

thanks John for info and instruction. Base on this instruction, I don't have to mess with the engine mounts, am I right?

I don't see how you can lower the transmission more than about 1 inch this way. The shift rod will bottom out in the tunnel. It would make more sense to do a "partial drop". The partial drop has been discussed before so a search should help.

Overview,

Disconnect shift rod as above in this post. Loosen transmission mount bolts (be carefull not to back them out too far and support transmission as Grady says). Put floor jack under motor and undo engine mount bolts. Lower engine enough to get to starter checking all the things that are attached to the motor so you don't stretch or break them.

I have replaced a starter without doing this stuff. The top nut on the starter should be an allen nut. A long allen socket (10mm I think) should reach it. The bottom starter nut is trivial.

the shift rod on a G50 doesn't interfere with the tunnel like a 915 does. you can't reach over the top of the trans like you do on a 915 because the G50 has a clutch slave cylinder up there in the way. you can't go over the top of the starter on the passenger side because there is way less room than on the '86 and earlier cars. you lower the trans, like the factory manual suggests.

Thank you all. It's done today. My starter is replaced. There is one thing I expected it will be fixed but it still there, the lound sound when start the car I hear once in a while. When twisting the key, there is a sound come with the engine starting sound. It sounds like electrical spark except it's much louder, once. This only happen once in a while.

Anyway, as John Walker said. I took the tranny cross bar off and push the shifter rod boot toward the front to expose the big bolt. Took that bolt off, separate the rod from the tranny rod, and lowered the tranny. I didn't really measure but I think I lowered it at least 3" or more. Thanks god and thank you all, the starter is replaced. Hopefully the starting problem is fixed. I can't really tell because I am really not sure if it's is the starter or it is my electrical problem. I am still strugling with measuring current (amps) lost when car's not running.

Thanks all for your valuable help. If anyone in OC, SCal and need a lift or mech shop, I would highly recommend Atlantic auto. He agreed to do whatever/however I asked and is inexpensive. Basically, I asked everything you guys recommanded. I know I asked for a little too much but I rather to be safe. He even welcome me to come out to his shop on Sunday, occationally, and have fun with my car for for amount of fee. Of course I will need his help working on my car.
