82SC regulator time?
My tach did the jumpy thing several times this week (again) and everyone seems to agree it's probably my regulator. It's done it a half dozen times over the 5 years I've owned my 82SC.
Interesting: If I shut it off while it's jumping, the car won't crank over (as if battery too weak), but if I wait 10 minutes it's fine. What's happening there? I also know I should check by body gound strap; haven't done that yet. I have to make myself small first! Next, should I replace the entire alternator w/internal regulator, or should I (can I?) replace just the internal regulator? And how hard is it to do this myself? I'm a capable home mechanic, but because so many Porsche repairs are new to me and require special tools, I turn most jobs over to my Porsche mechanic. Thanks for the tips, Paul

If you don't know how long ago the Alternator was serviced, do the whole thing.
Disconnect the Battery. Remove the Alternator as per Bentley Manual or Tech Article. The air funnel inside is a little tricky to remove. Mark the wires. Take the Alternator to a reputable shop and have them replace the bearings etc. and install a new Regulator. Install with a new fan belt. Service all ground straps with dielectric grease. If the Battery is suspect, have it tested. Even new Batteries can fail.
