Long idle, now smokes on startup, didn't before!
Guys, the other day when i was polishing my fuchs on the rear of my 85 carrera (89k miles), I idled the car in 5th on stands for about 45-1hr total @ 2 separate sessions (@25-30 min each time) I watched the temp carefully and it never got past the 2nd mark (8oclock)....I noticed after i idled it, and started it up to drive, it smoked a lot at startup, then quickly went away but it hesitated a bit for 1/2 mile, then ran fine..........the car never really smoked at startup before this, but i noticed now it still does smoke a little at startup if the car sits a bit (8 hours, more for a day, little more for longer)...seems it smokes more the longer it sits.
My car hasn't used much oil at all in the past, probably 1/2 quart for 1.5 - 2k miles! Any ideas what changed/happened @ this smoke at startup??

The motor is toast now. You must send it to me for proper use. I'll return it as soon as it is healthy, or mine is rebuilt, whichever is the latter of the two.

How many miles on your now? Is it still running great? Gunlover, I really dont think anything can happen from just sitting there running, they were made to run, idle, red line ect... You cant do anything about so just drive it. Just make sure the oil is not over filled. Most all puff a little at start up. |

Back to the idle: It's possible that the long idling periods allowed some oil to cook on the rings. I'd say drive the car and drive it somewhat hard once good and warm. Change the oil, put some Techron in it, or all three (Techron before the oil change, is what they say). |

Rather than Techron, you might try Marvel Mystery Oil if you think you have some oil baked on to the rings, as Milt suggests. According to MMO's webiste, you should replace between 10 and 25% of your oil with MMO. You might try doing that, then running the car relatively hard for 500 miles or so, and then changing the oil.

Actually, MMO doesn't recommend any reduced intervals for changing the oil. I think 500 miles is safe, but if there's any doubt just keep a close eye on the oil temp gauge while driving.
From MMO's website: How much MMO do I add to the crankcase? Marvel recommends replacing between 10 and 25 percent of your motor oil with MMO. For example, if the crankcase capacity is 5-quarts, add 4 quarts of your favorite motor oil and one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. If you get your oil changed at a “quick-lube” facility, bring a quart of Marvel with you and ask them to add it to your engine in lieu of one quart of traditional motor oil. Can MMO be used with synthetic motor oils? Yes, MMO is compatible with synthetic, semi-synthetic blends and regular types of motor oils. Can I use MMO to replace all of my regular engine oil? No, you cannot use MMO to replace all the oil in the crankcase. The maximum amount of MMO to be used is 25% of crankcase capacity. There's actually a Marvel Mystery Oil forum, and this was posted by the company's Technical Manager: Adding Marvel Mystery Oil to your crankcase will not dilute the oil lubricating capacity of the oil. When used at a 25 % replacement, it will lower the viscosity somewhat depending on the original viscosity of the oil. This lower viscosity does not affect the lubricating properties of the oil. Lower viscosity oils have the advantage of reaching metal-to-metal surfaces quicker and thereby reducing friction and wear.
