1966 912 electrical problem - please help troubleshoot
 

Car has been running just fine mechanically. Went to start it and nothing.. no power at all, I mean absolutely nothing, like the battery is dead. However, tested the battery at that moment with volt meter and plenty of juice, brand new battery. Have gone through a variety of scenarios, testing this and that... no progress at all. Before I have the car towed to the local shop, just curious if the early 911/912s have some kind of known electrical gremlin that presents itself this way... any ideas for troubleshooting?

Update - Finally got it to start, but found big red wire going into position #2 in fuse box was very hot on touch. When pulled off position, car would not start. Seems that I may need to clean this and other contact points going into the fuse box as they are greenish and showing signs of corroision...

Thoughts?

Do you have power at the starter motor terminal (large cable?) Also double check your chassis ground and engine/trans ground strap.

Looks like we had simultaneous posts. Anyway, yes, the fuse box in these now 40+ year old cars is a problem area. You can carefully remove the wires individually, lightly clean them & re-seat them on the box terminals with the small screws. Also, the bridge under the box can crack, so it might be a good idea to tape/label all of the wires, remove the fusebox and check everything out - new fuses are a good idea too.
