I bought a spare fan belt 3-4 years ago and felt happy with that until last Saturday when my belt broke 100 miles from home....

It turned out that the one I had was to short and was for an earlier car.
Luckily I knew of a fellow Porsche owner in the area that might have a spare fan belt. Turns out he hadn't but he went and bought one and delivered it to me. Thank God for helpful people!

Always carry a spare fan belt AND make sure its the right one!

Don't forget to carry the tool kit as well or at least the pulley's spanner wrench and a 24mm socket wrench too. A belt is no good if you can't install it.

Reminds me it´s probably way past time mine was changed. Not sure how old it is and likewise not familiar with the look of a belt that needs to be changed ASAP.

Yes, the proper tools is a good thing too.

Marcus, change it and keep the old (or buy 2 new) in the tool kit.

i have a silly question magnus. how'd you know when the belt breaks when you're driving along? is there a noticeable lack of fan sound or sudden massive increase in oil temp or what?

i always carry a spare belt (must check its size!) and carry my toolkit with pulley spanner too but i've never experienced it breaking to date and am curious!

The alternator light comes on. That's why some guys replace their clock with a BIG red light.

Yes, it was tha alternator light that caught my attension. Oddly the emergency brake light was on also, not sure if that was connected to the broken belt or if it just happend to come on.

I really didn't notice the lack of fan noice.

When mine broke I was at the track, wearing a helmet, and I still heard it thrashing around in the engine bay.
