license plate light

finally got to install the license plate light.

i've been driving without bumperettes for years and never got pulled over for not having the light for my license plate. At some point, however, I wanted to install something.
I kept looking and recently bought a "light bulb bolt" for motorcycles but I soon gave up as it required a little bit of metal work both on the bolt side as well as on the license plate bracket side. one, the bolt was too fat, and two it was too long.

so i went to a local vw part shop and picked this up.
in 30 min, I was done and happy.

No LED bling. good'ol light bulb giving gentle light necessary to make the car legit...

I love it. I love the look of my car without the bumperette's, but hate the blue-ish ricer LED look of my LED bolts. Thank you for this post. I have another project to add to the list.

bumper

Here is my 73. Bumper pads and deco removed. de-badged, front and rear, antenna and mirror holes filled, as well. I was really reluctant to even put stickers in the windows.

Looks good - only thing I would change is to drill a hole in the bumper to run the wire vs. go underneath (I did on mine) a little bit cleaner look without the wire on the bottom.

The hole will be just below and centered with the holes for the plate attachment. I put a rubber grommet in as well for chafing.

I was interested in doing a simple bumperette delete on my '82 911 SC.

Couldn't find some of the info I was looking for on the various threads, particularly the number and size of the holes left behind, so I pulled one of the bumpers myself to check things out. I had emailed Eric at bumperplugs.com to ask if he had pre-painted plugs, but he wanted to know the sizes and I couldn't find that info anywhere. (As it turns out, the pre-painted bumperplugs will not work... They will only fill up to a 1/4" hole)

1982 911 SC, Bumper delete notes:
  • Each side is held on with three bolts. The nylock lock-nuts are accessible from the inside of the bumper, but you do have to squeeze your arm in there a bit and the bumper edges can be sharp. I found a 13mm deep socket with short extension or no extension worked best.

  • There is also a rubber wire grommet and two wires running to the license plate lights. Easy to disconnect the wires before removing the bumper by pulling the light, two phillips screws.

  • On my car, there were SIX holes in three different sizes left behind, just on one side. It looks like some other years only have four holes per side?? No idea what the extra two holes are for.

    • Three 1/2" holes.
    • Two 3/8" holes.
    • One 9/16" hole.

My particular car also had some minor paint damage under the bumper.
  • Paint dulling/residue where the plastic was in contact with the bumper.

  • Heavier yellow residue, looks like some adhesive was also use to mount the bumperette?

  • Some chipping around one of the bolt holes. I think it was caused by the adhesive pulling the paint away when I removed the bumperette. I'm not sure why there was adhesive under there, the bolts seemed to do a fine job holding it in place.

I'm not sure this is going to work out for me... A few painted plugs I could probably live with. Six painted plugs, plus some blemished paint mean I'm probably putting my bumperettes back on or committing to doing a more thorough job pulling, filling, painting, etc.

Not very attractive bumperette's... Definitely have that "Federally Mandated" look to them!

Three bolts with locknuts. Use 13mm deep socket. Remove wiring first! (These things are much heavier than they look!)

The initial mess behind the bumper...

After minor cleanup. Definitely needs more. Yup, thats SIX holes in three different sizes, per side! That chipping around the bottom left hole might be the deal breaker for me.

But it really does help clean up her caboose...

...not to be a wise guy, but, what do you plan on doing for protection of you & the car in the event of being in a rear-ended accident...??

If somebody is particularly concerned about rear end crash protection, a 30-year-old 911 probably isn't a great choice. With or without two 15 pound chunks of rubber bolted to the bumper.

you'll have to take the bumper off, sand it down, fill the holes with body filler and paint it yourself or take it to a paint shop. I reattached mine with two stainless steel carrige bolts painted to match, cut holes for original license plate lights, etc.

When I got my 911 last year, I was all set to do a rear bumperette delete. Even went out and bought a used rear bumper and valance so that I can keep the stock parts the way they were.

But the more I look at it, the stock look is growing on me.

For now the rear bumper and valance is leaning against the wall in a corner, gathering dust. Anybody want to buy them?

Thanks - all of the holes were just filled in and a piece of aluminum was tig welded for the front divet. The plates were reverse welded inside the bumper with carriage bolts in a slot arrangement to allow for final fitting and adjustment. Same setup front and rear.

I also had the bumpers milled from the inside out so they are a bit lighter than stock. I used euro crush tubes vs. the US hydraulic ones for more weight reduction - the entire assembly is fairly light, front and rear while retaining good crash protection.

The valence is a club sport valence and I welded the plate holes in on that as well.
