24Hours of LeMons Help!
I'm cross posting this from the racing forum...
Wayne was kind enough to allow me post the following: A few friends and I are building a car for the 24Hours of LeMons event in July at the Altamont Raceway in NorCal. We’ve purchased and stripped a battered 1989 BMW 535i, and although it’s not a Porsche, it’s at least German. Although this idea started out as a few friends getting together for a crazy race, it’s recently turned into something much more important. And hence the reason for this post. One of our teammates’ dear friends has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He has a young family and we've decided that the best thing we can do to help is to raise money for the family. We’ve setup a mechanism on our team website (the Vatican Motorpool) for folks to make per lap pledges, or a one-time donation (details on the site), 100% of these donations/pledges will go directly to our friend Earl’s family. We figure that with the race being 13hrs long, and the track being 1.1 miles long, we could see as many as 500 laps, or as few as 10 if the car lets us down. Rest assured we will do everything in our power to keep the car running and in the race to the bitter end. Any Pelican that might have a business or organization that they want to promote can make a donation or pledge and send me a sticker for placement on the car. Last year the race was covered by: Autoweek Car and Driver Road & Track L.A. Times SF Chronicle Honda Tuning So there is every chance that you could see your business or organization name mentioned and/or pictured in a national publication! We’re also looking for a major sponsor for our car, we’re hoping to get some help with our expenses so we can make another run at this in October, giving us twice the opportunity to raise money for our friend Earl. The LeMons organizers encourage each team to present a theme, ours is The Holy Rollers. The idea being that we are 5 priests from the Vatican Motorpool who by mistake were entered in the wrong 24Hour race (LeMans/LeMons you can see how easy this would be…). We will have religious slogans/symbols (nothing negative or vulgar) on the car, and all members when not driving will be wearing a priest’s shirt with collar. Its going to be a good time. I encourage any of the Pelican crowd up in NorCal to make it out to the race to cheer us on and watch the carnage. Here is a link about the event: http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/index.html And our team: the Vatican Motorpool And our friend Earl: Earl's CaringBridge site Thanks for your time, Doug Roberts

Thanks! Good luck on your entry, the organizers are very keen on a good theme, you'll need something funny and original to make it in the race. If your first idea gets turned down, resubmit with something better!

While we've only had one very generous pledge from the Pelican community (Thanks Paul Guard of Guard Transmission!!!)... Its not too late to get behind a great cause, and help out a really nice family. We're not looking to pay for his treatment here, just gather enough donations to give them a few days at Disneyland or the like, to take their minds off of their Dad's illness.
You don't have to pledge per lap, you can just give $5 (or whatever amout) via PayPal here and know that you're helping out! None of this money goes to the team to help with our expenses, all of it is going to Earl's family. Thanks for your time ![]()
