2.7 clutch cable adjustment
Hi, i,ve just had to fit a clutch cable on my 2.7 75 911 (why do they always snap in the middle of town in rush hour traffic) ,away i,ve fitted new cable and have come to the adjustment and the manual gives one way of doing it and the 101 projects book gives a different one , i adjusted lock nuts up by quess work got in car and there,s no grinding in reverse and no slip,i didn,t think i needed to adjust any more , have i got it right first time or do i need to adjust more as none of the measurements seem to match the books. my car has the early 1975 arm on it, thanks

On my 74 I was told to have just a small bit of play in the cable to make sure that it was not tight and would allow for any expansion or contraction of the cable. One guy told me 1/2 inch of play. as long as you have some play, it sounds like you have it set right.

If you don't have a pedal stop on the floor board (I don't), be cautious about just adjusting to have, say, 1/2" play at the pedal. The cable only needs to move the clutch arm a small amount to release the clutch. If you don't have a pedal stop, and you have the cable so tight that fully depressing your clutch pedal causes you to swing the clutch release arm well past the point at which the clutch fully releases, then you can stretch the cable and stress the release arm unnecessarily. You want about 4mm (per Haynes) motion of the clutch arm starting from (1) the point at which the cable slack is taken up and release lever would begin to release the clutch through (2) the end point/angle of the arm swing when the clutch is fully released.
My 75/76 is a weird combination which has no clutch pedal stop. I've overtensioned cables and (I think) even caused a premature failure of the throw out arm by simply adjusting my pedal to 1" to 1/2" freeplay without a pedal stop. Now, I adjust to barely release at full pedal stroke, then tighten about 1 turn of the nut at the cable end by the lever and play with +/- 1/2 turn of the nut - just enough to get a clean clutch release plus a little extra. No problems with clutch arms and rapid cable deterioration with this method. The pedal has ~ 2" freeplay, maybe more, and yes a properly set up pedal stop is in my projects list. Good luck.
