Remote CD Box - Pictures?

I'm installing a remote CD 12 pack in my 84 cab. Looking for suggestions on location and mounting technique.

Smugglers box is already taken, what's the next best spot?

Pictures would be nice.

And, yes I did a search, but I found zilch.

I have a Pioneer 6-CD changer mounted in my front "trunk" and it skips whenever I hit a bump. I will replace the whole thing with an in-dash MP3 player. It's a much better solution than the CD changer, in my opinion...

Well I thought that might be a problem. But it also takes one CD in the dash, so maybe I should forget about the remote box. I just thought it would be nice to get the CD's out of my car.

Kenwood deck with an iPod interface. Even uses the iPod style cable, not the 1/8 inch jack. Sounds as good as it is going to in a 911 sunroof coupe.

I refuse to get an iPod. Never. Ever. Ever. I'll drive a water cooled Porsche before I do that. And I'll never own a water cooled P-car.

But, I agree that if I ever got one that would be the way to go.

Wow! I don't think I have ever heard such strong dislike for the ubiquitous iPod.

For whatever your reasons, I encourage you to stick to your guns, PBH! Conviction like this is refreshing in a world where flip flopping has become a way of life.

I know, I know. In two years I'll probably be driving a Boxster with an iPod.

Everyone in my house owns an iPod, three kids and the wife. And FedEx comes several times per year to do the semi-annual warranty repairs. I just plain refuse to conform. I draw the line at the cell phone. No other accoutrements or lifestyle enhancers. I just need a bare bones 911 and a toolbox to be happy.

Disc changers seem so early-90s. if no ipod/MP3 player...

Get an MP3 compatible CD player. One disc will hold 780Mb of music (~180 songs or so).

The 90's are a step foward for me. I'm jumping right over cassettes from 8-track. Quadraphonic 8-track

"I draw the line at the cell phone."

So just hook your music-playing cell phone into the stereo...

AGREE!

Down with iPods & mp3s. People no longer know what good sound is. Compression - even the so-called lossless kind - is not real music. Muzak - yes. Music - NO.

My wife caught the high-tech bug from my kids when they were growing up. Now, the three of them are always calling each other on the phone, walking each other through problems of these gadgets not functioning properly, when in fact, they just can't figure out how to properly operate them. My wife's new car has 7 CD's in the dash, 300 watts of stereo, along with XM radio and I can't even figure out how to turn the radio on so I can listen to the news on AM radio (I'm not kidding). I'm with PBH on this....a cell phone is as complicated as I want to get. Hang onto your old Sony Beta video recorders......Beta is gonna make a comeback!!!

I am unable to tell the difference between a CD and the Apple compressed format. I tested this on a very high end home system - Magneplanars, Sonic Frontiers, Cal Audio CD Player. I also tested the top (biggest) Windows MP format - I went back and forth twice with each to make sure I'd find something. And I also used recently recorded CD's (not something from an old Miles Davis recording) - using a female vocalist & small ensemble.

Now maybe you can hear the difference - but I'd like to see the data from your double-blind experiment. One can also argue that some types of program material - maybe piano or orchestral music - would be more likely to show off the pumping or other artifacts. But the proof is in the pudding.

At minimum, you are going to need to spend several tens of thousands of dollars on a system capable of resolving the difference.

It will NOT be in your 911 - that's for sure.

Maybe you just don't like the idea?
If you've heard a difference maybe you can describe the setup & program material, and whether it was a blind test or not.

Randy - some albums I definitely agree, Folk stuff, or 3 chord rock and roll but I gotta tell you I can easily tell the difference between the vinyl Dark Side of the Moon and the CD version. And compression at 167 or whatever the step up from the 128 renders the songs almost unrecognizable. It sounds like the demo version that Roger used to sell David on the merits of the songs.

IMHO, of course.

Whoa -- wait, wait! Those are differently mastered.

I might try my same test on Floyd -- it's one of my favorites.

I'm also interested in magazine articles where the reviewer claims he can hear the difference.

But, back to the thread - digitized music files are going to be everywhere soon, and CDs won't be. I don't see a problem given the environment that a 911 presents.

To put this a different way, when converting files for the iPod, I compress to MP3 at 160kbps, and whether it is Janes Addiction or Stevie Ray Vaughan or Neil Young, or the Rolling Stones, I am generally pleased with the sound quality - even when I am plugged into my home amp. It is only when I hear albums like Dark Side of the Moon or Abbey Road or Pretzel Logic, albums where studio recording craftsmanship is a huge part of the artistic process do I notice huge gaps in the quality between iPod and CD, and there is no comparison between the warmth of vinyl albums and the brassy brightness of CD's, IMO, especially with some of the classics,

Having said all that, I knew right away that I would never have high quality music in the 911. It will never ever happen. In that environment, the iPod is way more than adequate, and the convenience of having 3000 songs to choose from outweighs any sonic drawbacks.

My two rambling cents.

I see you aren't far away - we should get together with Roger Waters sometime...

- what CD players have you tried?

Randy, I probably agree, but I'll let you know when I've finished installing my system in the 911.

But after spending 25+ years in the audio business, I know that it is all subjective anyway. I've watched engineers & audiophiles tune/listen/futz with systems/components/software etc. I've heard enough theories to make you gag. And of course, there is no absolute right or wrong.

But I know what I like . . .

But on topic . . . well, not really but . . .

Here is where I planning to mount my amps. On a piece of MDF & bolted to the spare tire. I plan to leave cable slack so I can lift it off to access the spare tire. And the room in front will fit the tool kit & umbrella etc.

This leaves the deepest part of the trunk free.

Ian
