1965 2.0 911 engine questions
I have a friend who is overhauling a very early model 911 engine. He needs someone to modify the oil system to upgrade it as well as machine the cylinder heads to prevent them from leaking in the future.
Any suggestions on machine shops for a vintage engine like this? My friend is a very good engine builder but has been retired for a while and lost all of his contacts in the business. He is very, very experienced at building 911 engines so not a problem there, but needs to find a good shop that has worked with early style engines. He is located in the mid-west. Thx, Joe

Joe,
Actually, you have TWO friends who are overhauling a very early 911 engine, I being the other. I sent my case to Ollies after extensive research. Shipping was $50 from New York City, so not a big deal. I had George inspect and evaluate the case, perform the oil bypass modification, piston squirters, relieve the case to take an SC oil pump, tumble-polish the case with ceramic media and then remove the oil gallery plugs and thoroughly clean the oil passages, then replace the plugs. That was about $800. With the early cases you don't often see the same issues that the magnesium cases have, such as distortion after they are split to an extent that requires a line bore, ovaling or wear to the through-bolt holes, distortion of the spigots requiring boring or decking, etc. In certain cases, the intermediate shaft bore can be worn, as this does not use an insert bearing like the later cases. The fix for this is expensive insofar as welding up of the case and remachining for a bearing insert and the later intermediate shaft is required. All else is superfluous e.g. the boat-tailing or "kremer" modification or enlarging the spigots for a 2,5 (gasp! Don't destroy an early case for that!) In any case I will post some photos when I get my case back in a couple weeks but I would suggest that your friend call Ollies in Santa Ana and speak with George on the subject. Good luck!

I had my 2.0 head work done by Competition Engineering in CA. Very satisfied!

John,
What's the "the oil bypass modification"? P.S. Thanks again for the head!

Rich, it's a common mod to earlier cases that the factory did in 1976.
The oil pump has a pressure section and a scavenge section. Prior to the oil bypass mod, any excess pressure from the pressure section was bled off into the bottom of the case. This oil had to be picked up by the scavenge pump and repressurized. The oil bypass mod routed overpressure NOT into the case but back into the input line to the pressure side of the pump. The result was that the scavenge side of the pump was made smaller, as it didn't have as much work to do, and the pressure side was made larger, for more capacity. The more efficient scavenging also reduced horsepower loss inside the case, because there wasn't as much oil sloshing around hitting the moving crank. But Warren has described it in detail here. . . oilpump modification The pleasure is mine on the cylinder head, I'm glad you can use it.
