Couple of questions about timing chain tensioners
1. How do you tell if your car has had the Carrera chain tensioner upgrade done? I believe the casings are different, but I don't know how.
2. If you have the original chain tensioners is there any warning if they're going to go? I ask as I was under my 2.8 earlier and noticed there was quite a lot of noise coming from the two casings. Not noticable above the car, but noticable down underneath and it seemed noisier than my 2.2 (which I don't believe has had the upgrade, but can't be sure). Thanks in advance Adam |
if you have the carrera chain tensioners, they are hydraulic
wich means there ought to be an oil feed line coming down from the cam oil line... failing tensioners would give a rattling noise, best heard at around 2000 rpm |
This thread has pictures of the left and right side cam covers. If you've got tensioners installed, you'll see same style oil lines.

Thats a great help. Thanks guys.

What's the general opinion about the 930 tensioners with the safety collars as an alternative to the carrera oil fed type?
|
general opinion is the hydraulic ones are still better
very few instances of them failing (other then some reports of 1 bad batch that failed brand new, which is the exception to the rule), they don't require much checking , oil pressure=chain tension, and still have the spring inside them , so it's a dual system.... |
