small transmission leak

Guys,
I acquired my first 911 ('86 Carrera) about 6 months ago and it has been completely leak free, engine and transmission. The PO had the engine rebuilt about 2 years ago (5000 miles ago), but the 915 gearbox was not touched accept for changing the gear oil to Mobil 1 gear oil. Now recently the gear box has started to leak at the small plate (4 proturding lugs) on the bottom side of the unit. Please advise approach to fixing this leak. I am planning to change the gear oil to Swepco 201 soon. Will the change to Swepco "cure" the leak in itself?

Thanks,
Dan

BTW - Here is a picture of the car.

My gearbox was rebuilt this spring...it leaks from the same place as yours. It's a pretty blue, though. Swepco blue.
I left it alone for now.

Mine leaked too but from the front bellhousing. However, when the level went down enough it stopped. However, that is another problem. I just topped it off today and I think there is a dribble coming.

So can anyone respond with a technique for fixing this leak point? I am going to drain the fluid early next week anyway so is it just a matter of replacing the gasket? Any experienced direction would be appreciated. Thanks!

You might just try some sealant around the piece. Be careful when removing it as your shift forks are in there. I think I would try some high tack gasket maker. Pelican probably has the gasket for that piece.
Can't hurt to try it since you are changing your fluid anyway.
I am not going to bother with mine as my Swepco is only 5000 miles old.
Hope this helps out,
Wayne

Mine leaked the same place...easy fix. Remove the four nuts and the plate will drop down. Replace the old paper gasket, or use silicone gasket in a tube.

My Swepco arrived today from Pelican so this weekend I will be changing the fluid. If I use Silicone to seal the plate were the leak is coming from, what torque range do you guys recommend on the 4 M6 nuts?

Thanks,
Dan

sorry to bump such an old thread. i may have this issue. i cleaned everything up, to verify that the swepco is coming from this plate. how did this thread end? take the plate off, and stuff just falls out?

i may elect to leave it alone for awhile. my swepco is brand new.

Maybe a light re-torque of the nuts? FYI, looks like this is the gasket you would need to replace: 915-303-225-00-M260

We'll get a clean pan and save the Swepco. That stuff's too expensive to toss when it's only 2 months old.
