Question Oil cooler scoop question

I'll be running in an autocross soon and was wondering if I should put in the oil cooler scoop I've had for the past year.

Does it really help even though I have a fan?

If I do put it on, will the increased flow cause excess wear on the fan by spinning it faster on the motor, or will it slow down the fan?

Brian

It really does nothing...kind of looks cool, but that's it. It simply does not allow enough airflow to +/- affect anything. It will not negatively affect your cooler or fan. (I do have one, by the way...)

Like Drew, I also have an oil cooler scoop. Unlike Drew, the scoop lowered my temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees.

I have two oil cooler scoops. One on each side.

I've recentely added a 2nd Carrera cooler to the other side of the car (drives side).

I'm not sure if they make a difference or not (since I've not had a chance to test it), but the visual effect is great. My car now has "horns" (like a bull).

:-)

I have one too...
I can't believe it would make much difference at lower speeds on an AutoX run... High constant speed it helps. DE's At Big Willow, I've not seen oil temp rise above 200.

At constant cruising speed, it makes a remarkable difference! At high outside temps, high cruise speed with A/C on, I've seen 25-30 degree lower temps with the scoop!

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like it works better on the Interstate than in an autocross.

I won't worry about it for now; it I have time, I'll put it on. If not, the car should be okay.

I agree; I think it looks cool though!

plus, if you are running a stock ax class, the scoop could be cause for a protest. (non-factory cooling aid)

I have the scoop and have noticed on highway driving etc my temps do not get above 180 where as before they would on hot days occasionally. I would say it does do something but it is only effective when the car is in motion. I also have upgraded to a carerra oil cooler up front.

Note that your '89 has a cutout under the front bumper above the passenger's fog light that already allows air to get to your cooler at highway speeds. Accordingly, you may not see the cooling gains that people with earlier cars (pre-'84) have.

Your Carrera cooler and fan is plenty sufficient for an autox.

I have one too, and have not seen oil temps above 210 even during the hottest days at Streets or Big Willow (but I DID install a center B&B oil cooler in series w/ my Carrera cooler).

If worst comes to worst, could you remove your right front turn signal assembly for more airflow to your Carrera cooler?

I've looked and I don't see any cut-out as depicted in Wayne's 101 Projects book. There is only a 1cm gap that is in between the bumper and front valance. No obvious cutout.

Bill, it doesn't really matter to me if there is protest. I go to AXs for improving my driving skills and to get to know my car better. But I appreciate to heads up!

I'm with you Brian,
btw I have one and like the west coast trackies, my oil temps stayed 180-190 at Watking Glen in the summer.
before install 250-290 was not uncommon, (also got rid of thermal reactors)

I wonder if they got rid of the cutout when they switched from the 28 tube brass cooler to the Carrera cooler with a fan...interesting.

I designed this one up with my race logo on it "Speed Dog" and SLA'd a prototype. I saw the temps drop by ~15 degrees while on track.

If you really want to improve oil cooling go with a front valance cooler.
