Alternator Rebuild

I am finishing the final assembly on my engine and my 70amp Sev Marchal alternator is in pretty bad shape.

The car is current in Pittsburgh and a local shop said it would be $200 for the basic rebuild and it could only go up if the windings and the brushes are corroded.

I was looking around on the forum and it seems like most people are getting theirs completely rebuilt for between $75-$150.

So, what are my options? Is there anwhere i can send this alternator to get rebuilt?

I was hoping to have this car running by the weekend, so i would love to find a place with a quick turnaround.

Thoughts?

I will take a few pics when i get home to show you all the condition of the part.

Can someone help me find a place to rebuild this?

Seriously, that alternator has been inexpertly rebuilt before-- see the electrical tape on the wires? When the shop sees that they freak out which is why you're getting a premium price.

What will they DO for $200? Replace diodes entirely? Replace wiring? Replace bearings? Rebuilds vary significantly among rebuilders-- some do everything, others just change the bearings and bead-blast and dip the diode plate in glyptal and call it cool.

where in ct are you? if you are close enough and would like i can give you the info for the place that rebuilt mine ($80) in the wallingford area. the guy did a great job and quickly. They might raise the price when they see what you've got but it's worth having them take a look at if not too far away. Email me at felix_browne(at)hotmail.com and i'll get you their info.
