Timing marks, help!
Fairly new to the site and need some help.
Trying to adjust the valves on my 76 s and cant find a Z1 mark for top TDC. There are 2 sets of double notches and one single that is only on the front of the pulley, that one seems to line up the rotor with mark on distributor, pics below. Any help would be great!! Thanks Rich http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181265615.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181265639.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181265666.jpg |
On your 2nd picture, it's the set of 2 marks together on the left - Z1 is the right mark of the 2 marks. The is, turning clockwise, it's the 2nd set of double marks, and the first mark of the 2 you come to. It should be marked Z1 on the pulley face (rear of the car). Let me know if you are still confused - I can take a picture, just not right this second.

got it,
Thanks |
Rex,
rotor does not line up with mark on dist using the double notches (any of them) |
Your 3rd picture shows the distributor is at the end of its adjustment. Could your distributor be indexed wrong?

Rotate the pulley so that Z1 points down - this will allow you to see the face of the pulley better. You should see the Z1 marked on it.

Waynes photos show a single notch for a 120* rotation, I only have the 2 double set of notches.
How do I determine 120 degrees as I go thru valve adjustment Thanks |
The front face of the pulley has the single 120 deg marks (toward the rear of the car), as opposed to the double marks that are on the other half of the pulley. They should be 1/3 of a rotation, or 120 mm around the pulley - you should have the single marks. They are small and hard to see. Look closely.
An example of one can be seen on the left of my last picture - this is not 120, only about 30 - but the 120 should be there. |
Just cleaned off the pulley and put on my glasses, and what do you know!
Thanks for taking the time Rex, much appreciated! Rich |
Rex,
looking at your distributor, are you running an Ignitor instead of points? How do you like it? Just ordered one to install. Rich |
Yes I have an ignitor. For some reason, my points were constantly changing. I couldn't keep them adjusted correctly, so I switched to the Pertronix Ignitor. It is fool proof, and I haven't had any trouble with it. I recommend this change as a good improvement.
