If replacing one axle should i do the other while I am there? plus diff question?
Still looking for a growling noise in an 82 SC. While convinced its the diff I pulled down the drivers side since the outer CV was throwing grease. While pulling it down I moved the cage enough for the balls to fall out. I am assuming this points to a lot of wear. It seemed very clunky and hard to move through its span.
After degreasing I removed the c clip and found the axle end pretty mauled up. Probably to the point of not getting the CV of without more damage to the axle end and the CV, so I have resigned to ordering either new or rebuilt axle for that side. So the real question after all of that is bite the bullet and order 2 or just do the side that is bad? Also while the bearing isn't making any noise it seems to have a lot of in and out play. I have 2 on order from the host I am guessing do that to while I am in the area? If I hold one wheel still and turn the other I get a noise from the diff area. The wheels turn together when both are in the air so it acts as if its a limited slip diff. I am thinking its much to loose if you can still turn one wheel by hand with the other one the ground or am I just trying to equate the force it takes to move my old Chevy's limited slip as more than required for a Porsche? The noise started awhile back when I changed to mobil 1, (previous post) and I then made a weird mix of GM limited slip additive, supertech and mercruiser outdrive fluid and the noise and feeling went away. I drove this mix for about 2 weeks and then changed to swepco and the noise came back. I am going to try limited slip friction additive with the swepco and see if that helps. Any ideas? |
That's a good question, and applicable to me to soon, so I'm interested in others response.......anyone?

You don't have to replace both shafts if only one is bad. I would however replace the boots on the other shaft and check for wear. The replacement shafts aren't that expensive at some places and save you a messy job.
You most likely do have a LSD. Congratulations they seem to be pretty rare. You can have it rebuilt as it sounds like it's slipping easier than it should. Personally I'd just turn up the radio. -Andy |
