E-brake cable question early/late 911

Was there a difference between the ebrake cable connections from the rear of the body through the trailing arm to the e-brake spring assembly/castle nut from an early car (mine is a '71) to a later car with aluminum trailing arms (say '86 suspension setup) which I have installed now. (swapped shock bridge in engine compartment to accomodate later shocks)

It seems I am about an inch short of being able to get the ebrake handle to line up for bolting in after fastening it the cable equalizer assembly.

Were the cables longer in later years? Was the steel sleeve that goes through the trailing arm different? Was the angle at which they went through the trailing arm different? Was the ebrake handle assembly different? There is some more very small adjustment available, but doesn't seem like that much to make enough difference...Just trying to figure out if maybe I need to do something different before I get any further.

Any knowledge is appreciated.

Erik
