1975 911S - Is it rust in the trunk?
 

Hi,

My name is Markus and I am writing from Munich, Germany. I am new in this forum and I need the help of 911 specialists:

There is a 1975 911S in the US which I would like to purchase. The seller sent me pictures and everything looks nice but I am scared about the trunk. For me it seems that there is rust and it also looks like it was welded.

What is your opinion on that?

It is hard to tell what is going on from those pictures.

You have to be a little cautious when dealing with 1976 cars because some of them were not fully galvinized as the turn to full galvinization started "sometime" in the year.

What is the asking price on the car? Unless it is really cheap and is a great deal I would probably suggest that you look for a cleaner car.

If you really like this particular car and the price is good, ask to get some better pictures around the battery. That section definetly has a high tendency to rust. Also have them take photos of the door jams, wheel wells, corners of the front windshield and rear windshield . Be extra cautious of the areas around suspension pickup points. Have them also take some shoots around where the Jack receiving hole is in the rocker panels. That is another location that likes to rust a lot. If you are serious about the car, maybe a local pelican can go take a look at it for you. If it is in the Philadelphia, Pa area I'd go take a look for you.

The price is high, but I have pictures of all the areas you mentioned (except the area around the battery). Everything looks good ... and I like the car.

Here's my guess. This is not rust. The rust would show up first under the battery. This looks like the PO had a front oil cooler installed - probably before going to the 3.2. For whatever reason, the front oil cooler was removed, and the patch that you see here has been installed. Not the most professional job, but maybe not that critical of an area - especially for a track car. I am surprised to see a big motor, race seats, harnesses, roll bar.....and the stock skinny rear tires. No big flairs? Maybe that was next and the PO decided to sell instead.

Do you guys notice the rubber oval plug in the upper left? Looks
like where my a/c fan is located in my 87 carrera. The indentation
in the floor is a mystery to me though. Doesn't look that bad
really, I would wonder why the guy didn't wipe it out better
with just some simple green., and if not why the big hurry to get
it sold in the first place !!!!! Me I would take my time and make sure the minor flaws are addressed at least before I listed it for sale.

Marcus, that is $15,000US too much for that car. You can get a much better car (long hood) for less than that much. The long hoods retail value much better than the mid year cars. I would say keep looking. That car on ebay would not sell for more than $12,000-$16,000.

guys- all factory a/c equipped cars came with the indentation in the pan, the holes for the fan, and assorted mounting holes for fasteners. So this is NOT an oil cooler panel mod- just a/c "delete" per some prior owner

Just out of interest, what color is fan blade? Red, by any chance.

I would bet that the front pan is a little on the weak side. My '73 had a little less rust colored areas, but a couple of hard pokes to the metal with a screw driver left holes.

TRE is right on, thats a factory AC delete, Done it my own self......

Mine had a large 5" or so hole in the front vertical panel and the windshield juice bottle was up on the body shell crossmember above the gas tank. It was/is a 72 so it may also be slightly different.

Thank you guys! AC delete is better than rust repair. I personally like the combination of the big engine and the narrow body. But anyway, I am not sure about the car and I will take my time to come to a decision.
