1973 Targa seatbelt retractor

The passenger seatbelt retractor locked up yesterday. I fished it out of the car today, and disassembed the thing. The retracting coil got lost in the garage when I unscrewed the cover, but I found it and rewound it. I also captured the 12 ball bearings, so I have all of the essential parts. I'm the original owner, so I know the history: I've never messed with the part of the car until today :-)

1. There is a weak spring that seems to keep the locking mechanism apart. This spring seems to be weak. Where do I get a new one?

2. The seatbelt reel seems to be void of lubrication, but I sense that at one time there was a light oil on the shaft. Does the reel-shaft need lubrication? It chatters quite a bit right now which I think is a lack of lubrication.

Thoughts out there, or punt and get a new one... This part was made by VW.

John.

I guess I fixed it.

I lubed the shaft with a product used for key locks... Then I spent about 20 minutes figuring out how to put it back together... correctly ;-)

The next time I do this job, I will not disassemble the mechanism. Instead, I'll just remove the reel, pull the belt until I reach the end, leaving just the spool, and then I'll lubricate the two bearing surfaces. I don't think it is necessary to disassemble the thing unless you are bored, and like to tinker.
