Brake dust shields - What's the consensus, leave on or take em off ??

You're gonna get replies split down the middle. Think it's personal preference. I believe they are more related to water than dust, but I may be wrong. I just did a complete front end refresh, and left them off because everything looked so nice and shiney, but I couldn't get them clean enough. You don't really see much of them though.

I took mine off for brake cooling purposes. At the track, the inside pad was wearing much faster than the outside pad due to heat. Now that the dustshields are off, the wear rate is even. Of course, this isn't an issue if you only drive your car on the street.
I've also heard that the dust shields are mainly to protect the rotors from water.
