diy carpet underway....

my interior has gone through a few changes since i bought it 6 years ago.....
the stock interior was red/black and tired, i changed that and went to black......then when that got worn out i went to grey but decided it didn't go well with the gp white exterior.....
si i've decided to go back to black, for how my 911 gets used and being pretty handy i never saw the sense in spending big $$ on a pre stitched carpet kit.
in my searches i haven't been able to find a nice plush carpet for "cheap" which looked factory and would hold up, on a recent trip to lowes i noticed they had a nice rubber backed black plush carpet (for marine or outdoor use) for $4.50 per foot (by 6ft wide), low and behold it's what i was looking for so i bought 14ft of it.....
here's a before pic with my camera phone.....

i have the rear deck and the floor covered and it's coming together nicely, being the carpet doesn't stretch too well there are a couple seams which i hide well.....but i'm very happy with it.
also with this project i'm reinstalling some audio which i removed 2 years ago, this time around i'm using mb quart 4" which will be in the kicks on axis (firing strait at driver/pass) and mb quart 6.5" in the doors flushed into my rs panels which are midbass only. there will be a single 10" woofer in the smugglers box. the source unit will be my sirius stiletto running through a line driver, a trunk mount eq and i haven't decided which amps yet ( i sold my jl 500/5).
i'll take some good pics today of my progress, so far i have about $70 in the carpet

also tuesday the 911 goes in for it's alignment after refreshing the suspension and installing my bilstein sports on all 4 corners.......almost there

Bell,

I'm very interested in this project. Keep us up to date and hey, get a better camera! So are you trying to use one large piece of carpet or are you using your old carpet pieces as a template to cut new ones?

i covered the front floor in one large piece, a piece for the rear deck which goes down to under my home-made package tray, then a third piece which goes from the verticle part behind the front seats to the rear seat wells.
the package tray is 2 piece (front/top) which were covered separately and this hides the rear seams. i also covered the side panels with the same.....
oretty simple stuff really, make sure the floor is clean so the glue will adhere (i'm using "stringy" spray glue), spray the floor and the carpet, let it get tacky (this is very important) and work it on, this particular carpet stretches a little but not much, i started with the center tunnel then worked it outward toward the doors.
i'm about done with the floor/rear, the kicks will be last as i need to modify them for the 4" quarts.
pics to come.....

Did the same thinga few weeks ago....filled two garbage cans with the interior pieces(rear deck and rear seats, water damaged from PO) and laid thin black felt carpet over the clean sheet metal...came out great.

alrighty here we go......
the "white specs" you see in the pics on the carpet is dust and a reflection from the flash....the carpet is black as night....still need to sweep her out as you can see from where i was stepping under the pass seat
i still need to dynamat my doors as they've always been a bit rattly and reinstal my rs panels.
need to carpet the 2 footwell boards, re-vinyl the center console, finish the kicks, fix where the screws grabbed the vinyl on the trim pieces and instal the seats......but i got alot done

i made the package tray out of 1/8" for the flat top part, the front is 3/4" mdf which i routered the edges of the access holes.

time to go watch some F1

Very nice. Can you tell me the carpet you used and where you got it?

Thanks.

yes i glued it all in place, i used a stringy type spray glue "185"....forget who makes it, i have cases of it at our shop.
you need to be a little carefull with the carpet i got from lowes, if you fold it sharply across the stitch seams you can see base.....i had to redo the front panel of the tray the first time i covered it.
the kicks are done and now have mb quart 4" speakers mounted, i also readjusted my throttle pedal linkage, i've needed to do that for some time as i wasn't getting full throttle with the driver footboard in place (so it's been off for some time), all better now

fishcop....i was going to stitch vinyl on the edges like yours but need to order a part for the sewing machine i got last year, next time around i'll do that

killer!

I've been thinking of doing the same myself.

One question that popped up was --
Why there are so many friggin pieces?

So, I had been thinking of just get some carpet from a local shop and go to town on the car.

Couldn't you just go with one main floor piece?

That was the post I was trying to think of. Don't know if you can rebuild an engine, but I bet you could make a really nice Porche jacket.

Nice Job! I did mine last spring. I used bulk automotive carpet and 3M Super 77, and some contact cement in certain spots. Got rid of the PO wood trim, replaced all the shift linkage bushings and RS Door panels.

It turned out pretty nice, now I need some new seats!

Rick
