Well this sucks

Last summer my older brother decides he would like to buy his first Porsche and asks me to find him one.
Since he lives in Toronto there is a very limited market for classic Porsche Cabs. and he doesn't know the first thing about them except he really wants one.
I searched for 6 months and looked at a lot of cars for him.
We finally found a 89 Cab, black and tan. The car was owned by Ron Bornstien, who's brother owns Auto Werstatt in Manhatten Beach.
The car was perfect. Ron had his brother fix everything and anything on the car including a complete engine rebuild with Euro compression Mahle P$C's, valve job new clutch etc. He redid the interior(new leather) and top.
So we buy the car and it sits in my driveway from Oct to April because he doesn't want the car while there is snow on the ground in Toronto.
Rick even flys down for a weekend just to drive it.
He ships the car in an enclosed transporter to Canada, has all the import and duty done.
The car clears everything it need in Toronto with flying colors (or colours in Canada)
He has the car on the road for 3 weeks and someone turns left right in front of him.
Well my brother is fine but the car is a write off. To much frame damage to the front and cost in parts to fix a classic Porsche in Toronto.
My brother is pi$$es to say the least, as it was an 11 month process to have the car 3 weeks.
He has settled with the insurance company and bought the car back.
I will be posting parts for sale in a few days in the parts thread but thought I'd share the story and his pain.
Here's what it looked like a few weeks a go and I'll post damaged pics when I get them.
It was a beautiful car may it RIP

steve

That really sucks. We just went through the same hoops, red tape and shenanigans to get dad's 86 carrera cab imported in February. Had to wait 2 months to drive it. I can't imagine the disappointment after waiting 11 months.

Having said that, you'll find a hungry market for parts in Canada. When things settle down... ahh... *cough* dibs on the steering wheel and driver's side window motor.

Is it this car?

Is the frame actually bent? I am no expert, but it looks re-buildable to me...

Yes the frame is bent.
The gaps in the doors are off. You could probably pull it but you will never get it back to new with a Cab.

Toronto - everybody's important and nobody can drive. I've lost count of the number of "guy turned left in front of me" accident stories I've heard.

I was going to inquire about the oil cooler & associated pieces - but now that I've seen the pics it looks it might not have made it.

Sorry to see it.

Sorry to hear about your brothers loss. I lost mine last year, ended up selling the salvage to a fellow pelican. Hope it turns out better for you than me, the buyer still has yet to meet his obligations and it looks like this will have to go the legal route.

I'll take your word for it, but that car looks very fixable to me. You say the door gaps are off, but shoot, if you can open the doors, the car can't be that bad. That having been said, I looked at a Carrera coupe last year that drove, but is was a total. Why? Because there was a fold all across the front of the floor pan and tunnel.

Sorry to see it parted.

Hey Milt
How did those rollers work out for you? I haven't seen the car yet but my brother says the gaps in the doors are off and there is a fold in the rear fender flare.
I just think the shop didn't want to work on an old car
I am going to fly up and see it but I don't think it's worth the effort.

Email sent.

Just to clarify, is the car now in Toronto or California?

They drive like arseholes in Montreal, but at least they're paying attention.

Yes I saw the salt. I was just unsure because I see you're in California.

I sent you a list of items. Some we need right now for my dad's car, some we may nab for looming repairs.

$chit that is a nice clean car... what a shame

Sorry for your bad luck. Sounds a bit like my story on my first Porsche, a '67 912 Targa that I owned for 6 weeks (3 of which were in a shop waiting for a part), before a school bus used it (with me in it) for a brake. Good news was that the settlement paid my bills and left enough money for a '73 with 2 more cylinders.

My poor brother.
It was his first P car and now he is going to panic buy a newer one just so he can have a P car cab for the summer
It was one of the cleanest 89's I had ever seen.
A little heavy for my tastes but just a perfect summer car for him

( I crack me up )

Steve, still in the original boxes.

Hey, listen, put this car up on a rack and really look at it. Even if Canada has a salvage title program such as we do, if the car was that nice, it might be worth a 2nd look.
