Tough question - Value of RUF CTR replica ?
hey Guys,
I am considering a new 911 based project, and the one I really want to build is a reasonably authentic RUF Yellowbird replica. My proposed spec is; -1988 Carrera Base car -Twin turbo 3.2L, Motec, 350+hp at the wheels. -RUF CTR Airfilter box -Twin Intercoolers mounted as per original CTR, with fender NACA ducts ( and yes, I know they were less than ideal in this location, but Yellowbird still worked, and I want it to be reasonably authentic to the original car ) -G50 5 Speed box -Upgraded Torsions, Bilsteins, Sways -RUF 17" wheels -Fibreglass RUF Yellowbird bumpers -Flares modified to Yellowbird style, rain gutters deleted, Aero mirrors, previously mentioned NACA ducts for intercoolers -72 oil tank conversion -Cayenne calipers on 330mm rotors -Fibreglass trunk lid and rear one piece lid/carrera wing -lightweight interior -Half roll cage My big question is, who has an idea what this might be worth when completed, assuming the quality of work is very good? I do all the work myself, and obviously I'm not just doing it to sell ( I think this will be a great fun and fast car ), but I'm trying to estimate how much I might lose on this project when it comes time to sell! yeah this is a tough question, but for what its worth--this guy was asking 43,000 euros for his replica.

I have no idea how big the modified-911 market is in Australia, but the basic question would be, how many people are there in Australia who would be in the market for a car like that? Two thousand? Twenty? Two?

Is this a business venture or just a project? I would not go into any hotrod project with profit in mind unless i already had a buyer.

I was going to guess the same number, not counting the cost of the donor car, and say that you'd end up with a car worth whatever an '88 Carrera is worth, maybe few bucks more if you happened upon the perfect buyer. But considering that Australia has less than seven percent the population of the U. S., for roughly the same continental area, and that I would guess a substantially smaller proportion of that population consists of potential 911 buyers, your job would be that much more difficult.
The way I've handled it, in terms of owning an '83 911 that is equally "upside down," is that if I ever decide to get rid of it, I'll simply give it to a relative or sell it at an irresistible bargain price to a good friend. Anything but letting it go to somebody who for all I know is a jerk...

One big advantage of Stephan's car is that the restoration/modification proccess was very well documented.
If you write an easy-reading, entertaining book about the car, it may be worth more to interested readers. |

Interesting idea re. the book. I've actually done a lot of freelance writing for car mags in the past, so this may be an option. At the very least a build up story in a magazine or here.
I think the potential market maybe anyone who is looking for a fun, fast porsche. ie - late model 930 buyer. keep in mind I want to start with an 88-89 model Carrera. This is what I'm trying to ascertain. If it was worth the same as an 88 930 when I'm finished, that'd be just fine with me. I do expect to lose money, just trying to figure out if the xx years of fun will be worth it! I do think I have the ability to build these things for much less than some others - I guess when you eliminate all workshop labour costs and just come down to components the prices tumble. If I go ahead, this won't be my first car build. Speaking personally, the CTR is the next iconic Porsche that is everything a 73 RS isn't - fast, fast, fast. I track my 911 RS replica regularly and have used it in competitive events, but it'd be nice to have the grunt to pass all the hot EVO lancers, even if just down the main straight :-) Short of going out and buying a GT2, I think this is one way to do it.
