915 Shift Verification/Question 1st to 2nd
I have spent a long time going through the archives on the 915 shift problems and questions, but I just need to know if my issue is normal or may be able to be adjusted by readjusting the shift coupler.
I just put in the new short shift kit and followed the shift coupler alignment procedure. All gears shift nicely and are great, but 1st to 2nd which I read is relatively normal. What I have found when I shift to 2nd is that if I pull straight back it gets really stiff and then needs extra effort to get it into gear even with a pause. If I go from 1st to 2nd by pulling the shifter back, but a little more towards 4th it slide in smooth as butter. Can this be adjusted by making a minor adjustment to the shift coupler alignment or is this normal shifting with the 915 trans and I just need to find that groove? |
Sounds to me like you just ned to do a tiny bit more adjusting.
That said, are your synchros in good shape? No crunching going into second from first? |
Yes the syncros are in good shape. No crunching or grinding even when putting pressure to get through the stiffness. Everything is smooth except for the stiffness going into 2nd. I also have the wevo coupler installed.

I have an 85 Targa and have the same issue. Shifting into 2nd can be easy as butter some times, but most of the time, it's difficult and requires a bit of force. I never have any grinding what-so-ever. I bought the car over the winter with 117k miles, and it had the transmission rebuilt and the clutch replaced at 82k miles. My Porsche mechanic said this is "normal", and can be made better with some patience (and luck). Next week I'm going to use Swepco 201 Gear Oil, following his recommendation. He says it should help.
We'll see! |
If you've ever found these in your drained tranny oil ...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1181790745.jpg you've found the cause for your reluctant 2nd gear. Most likely you've got a misaligned dongle. Don't feel bad, it happens to a lot of guys. Trust me... I'm a doctor! ;) Put the car in 1st gear, loosen the coupler and try to move the shift lever as far left as possible, keeping the fore/aft location the same. |
