Transmission oil

How often should transmission oil be changed? I bought my '78 SC about 10k miles ago and it was fresh oil than.

Also, what brand and weight is best?

Thanks!

Much written regarding gearbox lube by clicking "SEARCH" button in the upper right corner of this page. Look close, it's small.

Swepco is a favorite and some swear by it.

Mobil, Shell, Chevron all produce gear lube at least equal to Swepco.

Then there's the synthetic vs mineral oil argument.

I have a 87 G50 and use Mobil 75w 90 synthetic purchased from Lufteknic last year for $49.57 delivered.

In my opinion, changing after only 10000 miles of regular street and highway would be at least 10000 miles early. However, a routine level check with removal of a small sample may indicate time to replace.

The most important thing to remember when you do drain it out is to remove the side plug first. It makes no sense removing the oil from the bottom plug if you can't remove the side plug to pour in the new lube.

I used Shell Rotella GL-5 spec oil that is what works in my transmission. It shifts and runs amazing compared to the old oil. I also put in a half bottle of lucas oil stabilizer so the oil would climb around better. I think it improved it a ton over the old oil, probably what is reported when people go from any old oil to Swepco.
