911 R rear fender to bumper fit?

Hi All,

I'm looking for a little help fitting my R style bumper to the rear fender arches. I've looked at alot of pics, but I have yet to find a pic of the rear arch staight on. This is where I am right now.... I had to cut and extend the fiberglass bumper to match the fender flare.

Then I welded on the arch, fit the bumper and glassed the end of the bumper after it was cut and spread apart, all the time trying to match the flare. Things went pretty well, but I'm not completely happy with the little triangular flat spot on the bumper just below the end of the wheel arch. A straight on pic sure would be helpful. Even a '69 thru '73 without the bumper trim would probably help.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,

Take a look at Ernie Wilberg's site and compare your car to the pictures shown at the end of the series on 911r number 20, particularly the shots of the blue car.

Good luck,

Thanks JR,

The flare on the blue car looks a little larger than the one I have, but I can see what the factory did with the bumper end. It also looks like the flares/bumper ends were not all the same. That makes things a little easier for me.

Matt,
You might want to have a look at my '72 although I dealt with the contours rather differently. I'm also in Santa Cruz. I think you were parked next to me at the Partsheaven swap.
regards,
Phil

Phil, I really would like to see how you did the contours. I still have your number in my cell phone, and I was actually going to call you this last weekend, but got too busy with the fathers day activities. I'll try to call tomorrow Tues. 06/19

Thanks,
Matt

R bumper/flare

I went ahead and rounded off the flat triangular spot on the bumper to try to match the pics. on Ernie Wilberg's R site, any opinions out there? triangle? no triangle? or unneccesary detail/splitting hairs.

+1 for no triangle...however i do feel that maybe a smoother transition maybe in order.

i am not speaking from historically correct information, just personal opinion.

I'm with you on the smoother transition. The flare looks nice and smooth, and the bumper looks like it is creased/kinked at the transition point. I Have'nt added any filler yet, only glass/resin, so I should be able to smooth it out with a little lightweight filler.
