SPORTO Electrical System
I have gone through the entire sportomatic system --- (vacuum leaks, micro-switch, vacuum actuator) and am down to the electrical system.
The problem is I can't select any gear including reverse, they will grind every time. With the engine off I can select any gear just fine. I'm hoping someone may have spent some time on this before........... I need to find out if the control valve performs the same action when the micro-switch goes from neutral into a gear as it does when you shift from a gear into neutral. My problem is that with the engine off but the ignition on I can hear the control valve making noise when I am coming out of gear (therefore connecting the control valve and the Vacuum Actuator) But there is no noise at all when I go from neutral into gear (No vacuum to the actuator) Is it possible that the stick itself has different ground points or contact points in the "inner shift lever" that work independently from the micro-switch itself? |

There are no other switches the servo should move any time you move the gear shift lever. Make sure all the contacts are clean on the switch and they touch when the lever is moved, you may need to tweek the tabs but be very careful. Pull the boot off and watch the switch as you move the lever around.

Hi B D,
I have gone over that switch dozens of times. I've fixed it in the past and am very familiar with the switch itself. That is why I am so confused. The switch will activate the control valve 100% of the time when I am coming out of gear. 0% of the time when I am going into gear. switch contacts are operating the same in both situations and thats why I believe there has to be another element here somewhere. I learned about a second brown/white wire that comes from a "bypass switch" located above the reverse light switch on the tranny. Are you familiar with this? It make sense since there 2 brown/whites and 1 blue/yellow going into the solenoid of the control valve. |

UPDATE!!!
I'm getting close on this fix. I've narrowed it down to one of the following parts on the sportomatic:
18 OEM-90530324502 Cam follower, for, back-up light switch 1 $19.44 19 OEM-90561305102 Back-up light switch 1 $82.32 20 OEM-91430324610 Cam follower, for, bridging switch 1 $1.91 21 OEM-90561310102 Bridging switch 1 $125.43 Not only is there a switch on the shift lever, there is one on the transmission itself that connects to the vacuum regulator. I totally disconnected the shifter from the transmission and came to realize that evrerytime the transmission is in gear the regulator gets the signal from the shift lever. Every time the tranny is in neutral and I go to shift into gear there is no signal. I believe it is either one of the switches or the little Cam follower that goes inside. I haven't been able to take the switches out yet because I have to get the correct size socket tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone can make sense of this and help me determine witch switch would be causing this and why? I intend to replace everything down there at the same time but I am still curious how the whole thing works..........ANY IDEAS??? Thanks for all the help... |
