Fire Extingusher Recommendation

Hello!

I want to install decent 2.5lb fire extinguisher in my Targa. Can someone please give me some recommendations on what to buy. I have been shopping, and it seems I either find bling-cheap'o units ($20), or high-end units ($200-$300). Whats the skinny?

BTW, I'm currently carrying a 2.5lb white marine type unit now...

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Tom

One word: HALON. After that, most of the aftermarket mounts seem to fit the AMEREX brand.

+1 for Halon. More costly (short run) but the residue will not cause more damage to engine wiring and components than the fire does (long run.)

Do a search on this site for user name " islandmanpa ". He is a seller of Halon/Halotron units. Nice guy and good service at reasonable prices. I believe most of what he sells are turn ins/refilled units and usually include the mounts. I purchased one last year.

Any recs for 2.5 lbs versus 5 lbs? Obviously, more is better. But are the 5 lb units too big to mount in a car as to be unwieldy?

I had an experience in the central Oregon desert, emphasis on desert. The middle of nowhere. My car was new to me, and a brand new axle shaft had shed it's boot and spewed the grease all over the catalytic converter. I had no fire extinguisher, the smoke was intense and I was all alone, with a very limited knowledge of the car, and no idea of what had happened to cause this catastrophe.

Luckily, there was no fire, but for a few horrific minutes, in my mind, I was hosed.

Believe you me, if someone had offered me a fire extinguisher for 300 dollars or even 600 dollars I would have gladly paid.

This whole setup was 250 bucks including shipping:

Safecraft 2.5 Halon, Brey-Krause seat bracket.

Does that Brey-krause interfere with shorter people with femine type legs, ala my wife, with the seat more forward than I'd run?

She's wondering if her petite calfs would hit it, if her feet aren't all the way forward and she pulls one back while entering/exiting the car?

Serious question, I want a fire extingquisher and tend to like the BK mount system that slides with the seats, only real area to mount it.

Dave, The BK that is for non-power seats sticks out too far into the passenger's foot area unless the seat is far forward. For that reason I sold my BK as have a few guys here. I really had no other option but to mount mine to the shift coupler. I'm n ot thrilled with that particularly since the way the mounts connects to the FE makes it look off center. Nevertheless, it is solidly mountedin my opinion and doesn't interfere with my seat which I keep almost all the way to the rear. Best of luck in whatever you choose.

Heap - it absolutely limits the forward travel. . . Fortunately for Brey-Krause, I and my passenger have long legs. Here is travel lost, illustrated. Hope this helps:

Miguel, I like that location, and was looking at the chromed units last night.

That looks like a 2.5 pounder right? I think they're 12" tall and 3" diameter?
