stuffed muffler problem

I just received another muffler and found that it was "stuffed" with pieces of cardboard, leaves and twigs in both chambers from the dual inlets. I also saw what looked like pieces of a small egg.

I think there was a small animal that lived in there once upon a time. I couldn't tell if there was a carcass in the muffler. The PO apparently had it in "storage" and decided to sell it.

It is in otherwise pretty good exterior condition.

Question: how do I safely clean it all out?

I was planning to run the muffler and burn it all out but I am concerned a fire issue and/or the contents being sucked into the the headers (is the latter an issue?).

Any ideas besides cutting the muffler open would be appreciated.

Vacuum, tape a small diameter hose to the end of a vacuum and suck it all out...or shake vigorously

You can also try to blow it out if you have a shop vac w/ that feature...

Duh...

Now why didn't I think of that? I guess I'm overthinking the problem.

I'll try both methods.

Thanks.

That's Hilarious. You have a whole ecosystem living in your muffler!

btw, do you have SSI's (headers). If so, do you have a 'favorite' smog test facility here in the SoBay?

thanks
