Calling all G50 experts!

Hey guys, so yesterday, I was getting my car ready for a track event today, and decided to change my tranny oil with mt-90.
Upon removing the drain plub, I found 8-9 needle bearings on the drain plug magnet.
Then I remembered that I had recently started hearing a strange grinding/whining sound in any gear at low rpm/high load. The noise would clear out after 2800rpm. Sounded like a ring and pinion noise.
Anyway, I am hoping that these needle bearings are from the diff area, which would not require an engine/tranny drop, but I do not know g50 trannies well enough to know where these bearing bits could have come from. Anyone know?
Thanks!!

Those look like needle bearings from any one of the gearshaft needle cage bearings upon which the gearsets ride. That's not a good sign and you should open up the transmission to see which bearing cage has disposed of those needles!

Wow! Bummer. That can't be good. Good luck.

Thanks guys, so definately need to drop the tranny and open it up. AHHHH! I have no time for this, so I won't be enjoying my car this summer :(

The diff's spider gears run on those needles. They are separated by a spacer that gets pinched and then cracks. When the needles spill out, they are free to migrate around the transmission (and a few may get ground up in the meshing R&P). There are a couple cures for this... I'll try to scan something today.

Geary, thanks, you gave me some hope! I patiently await the scan!

There's a clue in your sig. These cars aren't made for drag strips.

Geary 06-18-2007 09:43 AM

With a few mods, the G50 is successfully used for drag racing (although the earlier 915's definitely won't survive for long ... )

Racing is racing my friend. I believe that a true sports car can do anything well. Don't you think?

I suppose, but these cars are designed to corner. You can go straight faster and much cheaper in other cars. It's just my opinion. I hate seeing these cars die a slow death on a track they weren't meant for. They belong on a road course.

In the past, Porsches have definitely NOT belonged on the strip. But with the G50 trans, spool (or LSD), and 1st-4th dog box conversion, Porsches are whipping a** in the quarter mile.

Mike, I'm having file size problems in storing my "fix" page on a friendly server. However, I'd be more than happy to mail the page to you, if you (or anyone else) PM me directly at:

Mike's needles weren't the result of drag racing.

The car in the photo was an early parts tester.

The G50 dog box conversion (that happens to do well in drag cars) is the DIRECT predecessor to the GT3RSR and Cup sequential transmissions used by Porsche today.
