Long term plan - Turbocharging 3.2L Carrera

Hello all,

I picked up my first 911 (1987 Coupe) a few weeks ago and have been loving every second of it! I'm not in any hurry to gain more HP (I'm enthralled for the time being), but it would be something that would interest me in 2 or 3 years. Next year I'm hoping to upgrade to big reds.

This coming winter I'm planning on doing a valve job with a buddy mechanic to fix an already diagnosed oil burning issue. What I would like to do is make a FEW (I DON'T want to go crazy) "while you're in there" upgrades in preparation for a turbo down the road. I've read several threads pertaining to TC a Carrera, and I gather that a conservative target HP range would be between 300-350. So whatever upgrades would be beneficial in preparing me for that range - let me know. I would like to keep the upgrades made this winter < $2000.

I'm also planning on upgrading heat exchangers or going to headers (haven't decided yet) over the winter as well - let me know which upgrade would be most suitable for a turbo. Thanks for all your help and advice.

I won't get into all the pros and cons of turbocharging. There's plenty in the archives to ponder.

After studying this and total budget, and you really want to go ahead, perhaps plan for a compatible compression ratio. Research best head studs, improve cylinder head seal, etc. A used turbo exhaust system would be cheaper than fabricating one. Use a muffler in place of the turbo/wastegate for now.

Gather add'l pieces in the interim (properly sized turbocharger, wastegate, distributor, intercooler, turbo oil drain system, boost and other engine sensor gauges, oil lines, reprogrammed ECU chip, etc.). While shopping, you might get lucky and find all the pieces from someone's abandoned turbo project.

I'm guessing it would be cheaper and easier to just sell your Carrera and buy a 930 if that's what you are looking for...

I appreciate the advice Joe, and you're probably right. But it's more feasible to upgrade my Carrera in chunks than dish out the extra $$ for a Turbo. thanks
