Spares for a road trip, '88 Carrera

Okay,

I did a search and really didnt find what I need so here is my post.

There is a chance I will be relocating to the Moab, Western Slope area in the next 60 days.

Roads are a piece of cake having driven them before...but previously in my Honda Element.

This time, the Posche will be part of the relocate...so suggestions for road spares for my '88 Carrera.

I already have belts, both alt and AC, complete ignition, cap, rotor, wires and plugs and a DME.

Within the past 5k miles, she has had a new battery, new clutch, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter and typical 3k maintenance items.

Please share your thoughts, thanks!

According to the threads here, your head temp sensor should be on the new side. A failure can disable the car.

my most common roadside repairs have been to the rear tires (why do the rears always get the road debris), distributor, various fuses, and headlights. Now I carry a really nice air compressor, tire plugs, fuses, spare headlight and tail light bulbs, and check the distributor cap and rotor and give the center post a squirt of oil regularly.

A few relays for good measure, and make sure your compressor works.

I second the valentine one... I wouldn't order a ton of spares on the off chance something fails. I will second the air compressor, and make sure you have a decent wrench/ratchet set to do simple repairs and/or maintenance if you need it.

A well maintained Porsche tends to be pretty reliable and they eat up highways. Have fun... yes I know it's easy to say that, I'm taking a road trip from SC to TX to CA and back in a few weeks and i'm still trying to decide if I want to take my RSA or not... mainly b/c I don't want to put that many miles on it.

Oh, one thing... I always carry a spare headlight in all my cars... that can really suck if for some freak reason both go out (lol, ask me how I know).

Great stuff all, thanks...have the V1 and the tires are all recent replaced along with new valve stems. Head temp sensor sounds good also, thanks Milt.

I keep my maintenance pretty up to snuff and as Andrew mentioned, our P cars are pretty reliable. Havent had any real failures excepting the battery and the fuel pump died about the same time. I have H5's (factory) so will snag a bulb and assorted fuses. Thank you.

Thumbs up

Helpful post! Quote:

The front tires kick the junk into the air and the rears get stabbed. I've seen nails in the sides of rear tires! :eek

Don't forget

Every year or so I remove the wheels any apply "anit seize" on all the wheel studs and re-torque all the wheel nuts.

It's bad enough to get a flat but even worse when you can't change it because the wheel nuts are frozen.

I also carry a high quality tire plug kit and a torque wrench

This thread got me thinking of all the times I had to do roadside repairs to get home. Since I live in central California, anywhere I go usually means driving through vast areas of fields and barren or hazzardous territory. Just 4 days ago I was in the middle of nowhere, headed home in the middle of the night, and had to pull over to get the right side headlight working.

I always carry a set of hex key wrenches and a flex-head 3/8" drive ratchet wrench with an extension and a 13mm socket. The 13mm is good for a number of things, including unbolting the ac compressor if the main fan belt breaks. I figure I can do a number of repairs, including tightening the shift coupler, tighten the front wheel bearings, replace the fan and ac belt, and tighten the adjustable gas pedal (all of which I've had to do on the road). I also carry a Leatherman Wave tool which I've had to use, and a Swiss Army knife. I also carry a digital multimeter, spare wire, spare connectors, a magnet pickup tool, jumper cables, flares etc.

I almost always drive the 911 on long road trips, which are always enjoyable. I always have two rechargable flashlights (Maglite and Streamlight), and on long trips I carry another 2 for a total of 4. In the summer time I add spare water.

I don't travel lightly, that's obvious. But for a total of maybe 25 extra pounds it's well worth it to not have to get stuck and wait for a tow. In 20+ years of Porsche ownership you learn things. I have yet to call a tow truck to get home, although once I did have to leave Baby at the Porsche dealership in downtown Oakland. I came back and two days later changed out the distributor right there in the lot, and was outta there. Of course I had my tools with me.
