'89 Targa- few questions...

Hi Guys,
I have a few questions regarding my new car;

1. Should I run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through it every couple of months like I do my other cars? Got 25mpg on the trip home.

2. My targa top leaks air. It seems to be caused by A) the middle part of the front seal has shrunk and has gaps at each end and B) when the windows go all the way up, they lift the top a bit. Are any part of the seals available, and how easy is it to adjust the windows down a bit?

3. What is the official color of the targa bar? Mine needs to be repainted and I want to stick as close to the original black as I can.

4. My A/C needs to be charged. Is it worth it? I will rarely use it (just take the top off) but it would be nice to have it in operating condition.

Thanks in advance!

Paul.

When you are ready for a oil change, put a bottle of techron in the tank and when you run that tank dry, change the oil. Be sure to do s search here on how to check the oil and how to change the oil. Save yourself some grief Jim

Just spend a little more each time you fill up and buy chevron, with Techron. Probably the best injector cleaner available.

several threads here regarding leaking Targas. I don't think it's your seals you want to adjust, but rather the "raised window height". Do a search...

All the seals for your Targa are available from our host.

Can't answer that one for you...mine has been painted to match my car...Guards Red.

Depends on whether your system uses R12 or R134. R12 is about $60 - $75 per pound. The system holds in the neighborhood of 3 or 4 pounds. You can do the math on this one. R134, on the other hand, is much cheaper.

To spend a few hundred dollars on something you rarely intend to use seems like a waste.

With regards to number 3, save yourself some time and just send the top to Dan at CarsInc. I wasted a year trying to solve all manner of leaks. Dan had it corrected in a week.

I believe the targa bar should be Wurth Black Matte

Paul,

I use the big bottle of Techron before every 3,000 mile oil change plus I use Chevron fuel (almost) exclusively. If you are made to use oxygenated fuels in the winter (like I have to in the Portland Metro Area), I add Stabil to my fuel for each fill up.

As far as the Targa top, there are about a bazillion adjustments you can make. My front leaked horribly until one day I noticed that one of the PO's had added weather stripping to the front seal. After I took the extra weather stripping off and readjusted the targa clips to make them tight to the bars, my leaks went away. For the sides, you can both adjust the height of the window frame to be correct and you can adjust the side weatherstripping to contact the windows correctly. It is a trial and error kind of thing as just about every part is movable.

My Targa bar is brushed stainless steel so I do not think I can help you there.

who needs AC anyway....

First off, I pulled mine out completely to include every hose and component. From what I read, a nearly 20 year old AC system is going to require constant maintenance/repair/money. And a modern R134a system can be fitted back onto the car. Not a bad way to go if you absolutely must have functional AC and can afford to "invest' in an old sports car. Though, don't count on getting your money back at resale.
