G50 Throw out Bearing Shims?

The T/O bearing came with 2 shims, but for the life of me I cant get the circlip to fit with both shims. And yes, I am putting weight on the pressure plate, in fact, I am putting my entire overweight self on that sucker. Now to my point. I took one shim out and the bearing fit like a dream, all locked in place and even more importantly there is no play in the bearing. It feels like it is firmly in place. Is this OK?

Exclamation

Help! I'm having the same problem. Do I have to use both shims? The circlip snapped in beautifully with one shim in there.

No You have to have them both, That why ya have the shims. ya put 2 shims, the spring washer insert it into the front of the pp and then install the trush washer and then the locking ring.

OK, we'll figure it out. Thanks.
New Question: do I grease the TO bearing or just the guide tube and release fork? I'm using Wurth CU 800 hi temp/hi pressure grease.

You need both shims. You need a press to compress the spring washer enough to get the circlip into the groove.

My brother inlaw an I just did this the other weekend without a press. We put the outside surface of the throwout bearing on top of a jackstand, my brother inlaw, stood on the edges of the pressure plate while holding onto the garage door rail for support. While he was pressing down on the pressure plate with his feet, I was able to engage the circlip.

evil & butt (boy that's weird): thanks. I took it down to the local machine shop. Ten minutes on the press and one bag of donuts later its ready to go.

I got to thinking about this. Why does there have to be 2 shims? The shims serve no load purpose, thats the thrust washer and snap ring's job. I'm sure someone here has put on one shim and had no problems.

The shims keep the throw out bearing tight against the spring fingers on the pressure plate. Without both shims, the outer housing of the throwout bearing will rotate on the spring fingers causing noise and wear.

I was told not to grease anything. Picks up dust and so forth. Should be a ton of stuff in the search index under g50 upgrade.
