Is the car damaged after driving with the parking brake on?

Wife drove the car to work on Monday and when she arrived realized that the parking brake had not been full disengaged. I could swear now that the brake now pulls up higher than it used to but that could be imagination.

Wife noted she did not feel any drag as she drove the car but has only driven it once.

I drove it today and noticed nothing.

thanks for any input.

If the emergency brake still works, I wouldn't worry about it would be my guess. Not sure about the 87 but my 77 uses a drum brake for emergency seperate from the disc.

I think no worries.

You might have to readjust your parking brake. If it was on it would have worn down the shoes a little but no harm done.

If the brake handle was raised only slightly, say 1 "click", then there probably was minimal wear, if any. If it was raised more, then all you probably did was add a little wear to the friction material. I wouldn't worry about it.

Does the brake feel fully engaged by the 3rd click?

Most likely no damage save some excessive wear on the brake shoes for the e-brake. If she did not have to slip the clutch to prevent stalling the car because of the drag of the brakes, then you got away with mimimal consequences. Higher pulling of the brake handle is probably real, given the tension on the shoes during the drive. Don't tell her though--just say she now owes you big time.

I will have to check which click engages the brake now but thanks for the reassurances. I had told her the clutch was stiff but....

Oh, it's definitely damaged. You'll have to spend big money to repair HER huge mistake. I think you can milk this one...

She actually drives an Accord but I had her take the 911 so I could change the oil in the Pilot and Accord. Next time I will do that on a weekend.

The excessive heat generated from that mistake is going to require a replacement of the rear tires. Don't want them blowing out with no warning, right? She's lucky they didn't blowout while she was driving! She really dodged a bullet there. Well, off to the tire store.

if fully engaged, with good ebrake pads... the car wouldn't have driven well... so me things it was probably not engaged to well, and if it was, you needed new ebrake pads anyway...

inside of the drum , would make plenty noise if that was metal on metal... you'de know

I did that a while ago myself. The warning light cluster is not working at the moment so off I went with the e-brake engaged.

About a mile down the road I noticed a bit of vibration so I stopped. Could not see anything wrong so off I go again. Vibration still there...then I see it. The e-brake lever is still up.

Dang! Released the handle and away goes the vibration. Must have gotten those shoes and drums pretty hot to have a vibration.

Now I always do a mental check and release brake first after entering car. That and I pull it up a bit harder so car really drags on start off so I know somethings still engaged!

That and I really need to replace that warning light cluster. Its not like I don't have it...I've got a new unit in the box just waiting to be swapped out.

Good to know I'm not the only one who has done that!

David

I have driven manual-transmission cars almost exclusively since 1977. Both my 911 & my daily-driver are manuals. But for some reason, I have occasionally left the parking brake on in the 911.

I don't think I have ever done it in another car. It's only happened 4-5 times in the 6 years I have owned it. For some reason, I don't seem to see that the brake is on, or that the e-brake light is on.

Embarrassing to admit....

BTDT. You probably wore some lining off your e-brake shoes. E-brake shoes are sometimes surprisingly expensive. If you replace them and can't get a decent price on replacements, have your existing shoes re-lined at a brake shop.
