911 headlights

any and all please response:
1. What is the simple difference btwn H1, H4, H5...did I miss any?
2. What is best for 911SC? i.e. do I need the Sucro kit and if so, for which lights?
** car is a 911 SC **

Thanks!

Bob

H4 is the most practical. I hear the H1's are slightly better, but cost a bundle and are hard to source. The H4's are a huge step up from the stock sugar scoops or the H5's. As for the relays, you should add them. The stock wiring harness for the headlights is very weak and could burn out if you run some high wattage bulbs, leaving you with a bit of a problem. I run H4's on my 911 and I love them. It is definatly a worth while upgrade.

There is a lens design difference between Bosch H-4 and Hella or Cibie H-4. [Lens optics is another story.]

There is a noticeable difference in lens optics between DOT vs E-code.

Headlight relays modifies a design weakness.

The SC has headlights relatively close to the road surface allowing greater freedom in personalizing the watt strength. The industry standard for measuring watt strength is flawed. I use "strength" to differentiate a small diameter high watt dot vs a broad powerful pattern.

Bulb filaments vary among manufactures. Filaments or it's advertising logo, light pattern and watt strength, are a marketing man's dream.

there are many great headlight installs around here.

you NEED relays if you put bigger bulbs in; and should put relays in anyway - the Sucro kit is the easiest install

H4s are good. you'll have to research each item, incl. the Bosch/Cibie differences

H1s have the ability to aim hi and lo beams independently of each other. If you could find a new pair they would cost up to $1,700.

thanks everyone! I guess I need to do more homework, as usual it is a bigger picture than it seemed at first.

Do I have to wait for a rainy day to read the piles of stuff on headlights OR can I summarize the following:

H4 is the easiest upgrade from stock.
I really should add the relay kit no matter what bulb I choose.
Pick which lens style i.e. Bosch or Cibie I like.
Choose the wattage I want.

If this makes sense, where can I see the lens differences, any significant differences in the two, what wattage is recommended over the stock?

Thnaks guys!!
Bob

Pick which lens style i.e. Bosch or Cibie [is best]
Choose the wattage [that gives the illumination you need & doesn't blow up the wiring/relays] - most opt for the highest power bulbs they can...

thank you randy for all of the answers.
Just to finalize:
1. which lense is "better" i.e stronger/more resistant to rock chips... or best "value $$ ??"
2. I am guessing that the h4 is the lense & assembly and several different wattage & brand of bulbs can fit into the assembly?
3. is all of this avail from pelican, I hope?

(my application is an 82' SC)

thanks again!
Bob
