Wevo shifter noise
 

I just installed a wevo "coupler" It was a great improvement ( I had the "oval" bushing-ed original) Then 2 days later I installed my Wevo 915 shifter.Now I have major shifter/tube/tunnel noise.I just drove the car 500 miles,lots of freeway and stop and go.The noise this shifter makes is annoying to say the least.I have adjusted it several times.
My car is modified and I like a raw 911 driving feel,(I'm about to remove my Blaupunkt because I never turm it on) but this whining/grinding noise is ruining my 911 experience and I feel its not worth the shifter benefit.

The solid coupler does transmit more noise than stock, but not THAT much more. Did the noise start when you installed the 915 shifter? Did you buy the billet style, or the classic style? I think you may have something inside the center tunnel rubbing against something else.

I have both the wevo coupler, the billet shifter, and the original wevo gated shifter. I love them.

No noise in mine and I have all the WEVO bits.

Try removing the coupler and see if the noise disappears...

I replaced just the shift coupler with the WEVO PSJ on my 911SC and did not notice any increase in noise. Something else is going on...

Is something rubbing in the tunnel? Maybe the speedo cable, clutch cable or the shifter assembly?

Steve, that's a great little tidbit. I'd also recommend changing the transmission oil or at least topping up with fresh oil. If it's dry, it'll be loud. One other thing is to have a shifter boot made, but I'd rather deal with the noise than cover up that beautiful shifter.

I installed the coupler first and drove the car,no noise,then I installed the 915 billet style wevo shifter and the noise started.Then I installed all 4 wevo mounts.

If the wevo shifter is making that much noise, then you might have something loose inside the shifter housing, or perhaps the shift lever pivot. The billet shifter does not itself make noise. Any noise should be gear noise that travels down the shift rod through the shift coupler, and then out through the open top of the billet shifter.

Adding the Wevo transmission mounts definitely increased the noise/vibration transmitted to my shifter. The engine mounts (which I installed first) didn't make any difference.

Gotta have something off/wrong/misajusted. I have the coupler, the billet shifter and oem sport mounts. Tranny's gear set is paul guard and still not a lot of noise in the cabin.

Yeah, I have to add that those with solid transmission or engine mounts should be the last to complain about noise because they also usually have straight pipe headers and are wearing ear plugs and full face racing helmets.

I loosened the 4 engine mount bolts and re-tightened ,took it for a drive,no difference.I then removed the wevo coupler and put the stock coupler back in,still lots of noise.I have adjusted the shifter many times and its shifting correctly.
Also with the coupler disconnected from the shifter there is no binding or rubbing/ scraping.

Any resolution of this problem?
I installed the billet wevo shifter about a month ago and I'm getting the noise. I would be concerned about the fluid level, but the tranny has less than 10k on a JW rebuild, so I'm pretty confident that it is sealed well and working properly.
The noise goes away when I take off some of the sideways load (from the wevo's centering springs) by pressing outwards on the shifter a bit. No noise in third/fourth plane since the springs aren't compressed in these positions.

Frankly, I'm really worried about this, as the Wevo springs are basically putting higher than stock pressure on the shift rod in a direction it might not have been designed for.

The noise you are hearing is due to the spring tension on the shift forks. I bet the sound is most pronounced in first as you pull away from a dead stop, and in second as you rev up the rpm range. Decel will be pretty noisy in both these gears as well. What I did to help reduce the harmonics was order softer springs. I asked Hayden if this tension on the forks will increase wear and he said: negligible; I have my doubts...
When you're pulling away in first, try holding the shifter in between the gate (in first & second pull the shifter towards you slightly) you'll see the noise disappears because the fork is not under tension....

Pretty much the same as mine. I have the Wevo shifter, PSJ, Wevo engine mounts and poly trans mounts. I get transmission noise coming up through the shift linkage in all gears. I can make it stop by pressing against the shifter in one direction or another.

I've never really thought too much about it, I guess I thought it was normal with the mods I made and besides, the thing could howl and I would still be happy - it shifts that much better. I have a Targa with a loud exhaust; I really only notice it when I'm driving with the top on (which is infrequent).

I think the concern is more the potential for excessive fork wear, rather than additional tranny noise...

any time I drop the engine/tranny I "readjust" at those 4 bolts after re-install.

After engine is running I loosen all 4 bolts, snap rev the engine to get it to move a few times, and then re-tighten. I figure it re-aligns the engine/tranny to the tub otherwise it's being under a possible twisted load.

The springs got me to thinking about fork wear also. After I got used to the shifter+ I slowly started leaning my hand against the spring when leaving 1,2, or 5. It doesn't happen all the time but if I'm not distracted on something else it's something to do.

It's just another 911 nuance to me.

It did make me think of throwing some axle grease at it once in awhile instead of just forgetting about it.
