Key spins in driver side door lock

87 Targa with power door locks. Inserted the key into the driver side door lock to lock the door and the key turned a full 360 degrees. I can still lock and unlock the door, but something is definitely broken, since I can spin the key around in the lock.

What will it take to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like eith the lock cylinder has broken off at the end or the screw has come out. You need to pull the door apart to see what's up. The bad part is you have to pull it apart to find out then find the part.

group 911 is right... the same thing happened to me. Door panel had to come off and the handle removed. It is pretty straight forward when you get in there.

I agree with the screw coming out. I had the same problem when I bought my car. The screw was still in there, but had just worked its way out. The PO had bought a new key set with a new cylinder to fix it, but hadn't gotten around to it. So I have a spare key set, since I just had to re-install the screw.

A 1/4" socket driver will help. If I remember correctly the bolts that hold the handle use 8mm nuts.

I would recommend replacing the handle gaskets (the ones between the door and the handle) since you'll probably have to take the handle off to re-install the screw properly.

Good info. I'll take the panel off this weekend and take a look around. I'm sure I could take care of a few other maintenance items while I'm in there.

Make sure to lube and service every moving part you can find in the door including the check strap.

Here's a thread with pics of a disassembled door handle, and the steps to reassemble.
