Anyone good at adobe photoshop?
Can someone help photoshop these wheels into my car? Mine is 16" and these are 18". Thanks.

i have a set like that on my 73 i was going to use for track days as selection of tires are alot better. i am going to post them forsale in the classifieds if you are interested. 18x10 et40 and 18x8 et 20. i used these wheels to clear my 993 caliper set up i instaled.

Those ricer wheels would look pretty terrible on an older 911. IMHO.

I am wondering how is the ride of 18" wheels on older car. If the ride is ok, I still need much bigger front space to get rid of the adapters. But I do like the look of your wheels. How is the ride on street? Good luck selling them.

Hello,
The Thai car is a 1992 3.3 turbo. The set of 18 on the modern suspension is still a 5 stars comfort. I drove my 86, 930, 16 fuchs with him on the 2000 km. trip. I love the feeling of my older 911 but the 964 has got the best of both world, except those leaking steering rack issue. I drove 965 92-94 with 18" wheels several times so I know how comfort they are. They are as normal modern car, not as harsh as 911. Mine is an 87. It is harsh even on my 16" but I wonder will 18" much harsher or just the tiny bit.

I was consider the same bigger rims for my 911SC, and the wise man Jeff higgins wrote me:
18's don't really work all that well on the torsion bar cars. They don't have the initial compliance of the coil over cars that makes up for the lack of sidewall you will wind up with. That, and the 18's will unduly stress the suspension pick-up points, like the rear spring plate mounts on the body. I've seen a few tubs torn up in that area; some attribute that to excessive side loads transmitted through taller, stiffer wheel/tire sets.

so the shorter tire side wall (stiffer) will somehow be able to tear the tubs? umm.. I kindda doubted the look, stiffness, but be able to tear off the tubs... maybe I am wrong it is hard to believe.

Makes sense to me. The larger diameter of the wheel creates a longer lever, thereby concentrating more force to (weakest) part of the tub/mounts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lever The 18s = the board in the pic for the link above. The longer the board, the less force it takes at the end (where the tire meets the road and where the side loads are applied) to transmit a given Force directly to the weakest points on the tub.

I don't think you guys have considered all the physics here. The 18" rims do not necessarily mean the tire diameter will be larger than stock. You have to also consider grip. I've seen someone reference a factory memo about not using 18" wheels, but I have never seen the reasoning.
A track car with slicks and running 17's or 16" wheels will sure as heck generate more load (lateral and stopping force!) on the suspension than a 18" wheel with street tires. Even with 18" slicks, the tire diameters can only differ within a fraction of an inch. As for compliance or "shock" you have to consider the entire suspension within which the tires are a part of! There have been all kinds of failures on our chassis, but no one has scientifically proven that it is purely due to tire diameter or rim diameter. Hell some failures are on cars that have never run anything but 16" Fuchs and street tires! Last edited by MotoSook; 06-27-2007 at 08:04 PM.. |

i've been running 18"s on my 75 tub for ... almost 2 years now???? has it really been that long?
cornering grip is up huge from the smaller fuch's.... however i also switched from 7" to 9"&11".... so.... looks great IMO, usually get told the same... i've posted tones of pictures of the car... however it seems like every 3rd day ppl are asking for pictures of 18" wheels on an earlier 911... always post mine but never seem to help... - and my internet is fighting me, hard to do anythign let alone upload a picture- cheers Nick
