?'s For A/C Upgraders

I am thinking about system upgrades on my 80 SC. There seem to be many options at hand and before I go too $$ crazy for minimal results, I would like some feedback on the upgrades others have done.
I am leaning toward the Rennaire system from our host at $1200 rather than doing a piecemeal thing with compressor, Pro cooler and a new hose or two or a fender condensor.
How easy is the installation of the Rennaire and what have the results been? I have been thru several searched threads but want feed back somewhat more recent than these.
Can I get similar or better results from a different approach?

Mike,

I haven't completed an AC upgrade , yet, but I am in the same boat. I went ahead and ordered the Rennaire system. The determining factor for system vs peicemeal seemed to be the fact that the evaporator has a relatively high failure rate.

I will also be watching this thread, and good luck with your project.

I've got a Kuehl system in my 88 targa. (Griffiths Tech). It was already installed when I bought the car. I have an invoice for $2506 just for the parts. It blows 45deg at idle and 38 deg at cruise speed. Works pretty good, but I'd rather have the top off.

I installed Rennaire's system 2 last summer with 134a in my '86. Since I'm in Arizona working AC is pretty much essential in a daily driver. The OE nippondenso condensor was leaking around the shaft seal and throwing lube all over the place so I had a choice of trying to rebuild the compressor and stick with R12 hoping the remainder of the system would hold up or bite the bullet and install new & improved. I read as many AC posts as I could find and learned - thanks to Jim Sims & Kuehl that the reason the stock AC system didn't work well was that it was underdesigned primarily due lack of condensor capacity. With that in mind I ordered the Rennaire System with the serpentine front condensor, evaporator and procooler - which effectively acts as an additional condensor. The only thing I kept was the decklid condensor. The installation wasn't all that difficult, the kit instructions were good, and Ron was very helpful, but it did take time. It took me a little over 2 weeks off & on. The hardest part was threading the AC hoses to the front condensor because its a pretty tight space & you can't really see very well.
Last week with temps up to 107, I was getting mid 40's out of the vents. When it's only in the 90's I have to turn the fan and temp knob down or it's too cold.
