Rear end noise
I usually have my stereo turned up so loud that I don't hear much of anything going on with my car. However, the other day I turned the vol. down before parking. I turned 90 degrees to go into the parking slot and heard a low frequency sort of grinding/ roaring sound from the back of the car. Since the rear end is "posi-traction" is this just a normal sound or is it something I need to fix. The car is only going 5 MPH or so with the clutch engaged. Any suggestions other than keep the vol. truned up will be appreciated.

Change your diet, less beans, cabbage, etc... That'll probably reduce your rear end noise.
Sorry, couldn't resist. If you are sure that your car has LSD, then yes, some noise, at sharp turning radius is not uncommon. It might not be a bad idea to change our your fluid (w/correct additive) though if you don't know the last time it was changed.

that would worry me & I would investigate at every speed; clutch in/out etc. * re-post all the results
you can also tape a small microphone back there and record it

Have you ruled out bad rear wheel bearings?

I had or have the same noise. It was especially prominent when I switched to mobil one. After the change the trans shifted very smooth but after a few days I could hear and fell the growl. Lifting the wheels if you turned the tire you could hear diff noise.
I couldn't get swepco locally so I made a mix of mercruiser hi po gear box oil and generic walmart supertech 90 weight and the noise went away almost instantly. I just changed out the magic mix with swepco and while the shifting is still smooth every once and a while I can feel the growl. No abnormal amounts of shavings were found during the recent change, but there were some. I also have not ruled out wheel bearing going bad but havent disassembled the rear enough to tell Last edited by dbrisson; 06-04-2007 at 03:22 PM.. |

Hi there
My car - a 1974 Carrera with 5 speed 915 box and LSD - has started making exactly this sort of "graunch" when manoeuvering slowly. The car otherwise seems fine. The wheel bearing are fine and I've been told its the LSD which is failing and that they don't make these anymore! Just how serious a problem is it? John - did you find the cause and what was your solution? I'd be grateful for your thoughts Andrew NZ
