Porsche Crest Clutch trouble.....

Originally posted on the Turbo side.....

Hey guys,

I have now installed the engine and trans back into my 77 930 using a stage 2 KEP pressure plate and their "Race Organic" disk.

I have installed it no differently than any other clutch I have done but no matter where I adjust it to I cannot seem to get it to release. The fingers of the fork are properly engaged to the T.O. bearing and I have an access hole in the top side of my bell housing I can reach my finger into and when the clutch pedal is pushed I can feel the fingers of the pressure plate moving so I know it is working.

Is it possible that a stage 2 disk is thicker and there is a different adjustment method that needs to be done? I really dont want to have to pull the engine and trans back out but at this time I dont see any other options.

Help?

I talked to KEP and they tell me they have not had issues with any of their 930 clutches in years. I was told the disk is the factory thickness. I pulled my engine and trans again last night and looked at the clutch package. The only difference I see between the two pressure plates is about an 1/8 inch difference in the hight of the PP face, so wouldnt this mean the KEP unit would take more pedal movement to release and get it to disengage?

I am beyond confused on what to do to resolve this issue and KEP isnt too excited about helping either.

Any thoughts? Can someone tell me what a new 930 3.0 Litre 6 bolt crank clutch disk should measure for thickness?

Thanks for any help here.

Always going for the simple solution first.....Is there a chance the clutch cable is not properly adjusted?

cable was fine. No matter where I adjusted it to it would still not pull enough to release.

Hi,

I don't know if this helps, but I had my 1977 930 clutch rebuilt & when I got it back there were a set of rivets that extended towards the pressure plate, that required clearancing holes drilled in pressure plate to allow it to release. Compare your 930 pressure plate with the KEP one. It may be those rivets moving against the pressure plate as you press down on the clutch pedal.

Thanks Paul, I have already looked at that and they are machined for clearance already.

Thanks, please keep the ideas coming.

If it were me, I would assume that the part is fine and that something isn't quite lined up right.

I would start at the Disc. Did I put it in backward?

Then TO bearing. Did I get it on correctly? All the spacers and washer in the right order? (I screwed that one up on mine and only figured it out because my gut told me something was wrong and I went back a double checked it.)

I'd then move on the the TO fork. Is it on correctly? (I almost screwed that one up too) TO lever to TO shaft? etc, etc. All the way back to the pedal.

Is the cable new? If not, could it have stretched so far that it was barley working before and the new parts are just out of reach?

What about the flywheel? New?.............

Spacers? I am not aware of any spacers used on my application. I didnt have any on the old OE style clutch anyway.
