Cab Owners - Nagging Problem
My interior light falls down when I hit a bump in the road (ie., at least once a day in New Jersey). I know it is affixed differently in cabs than in coupes (not sure about targas). It doesn't seem to use screws. It looks like it is jammed into the vinyl along the top edge of the windshield. Anyone else have this problem? I'm tempted to spray silicone along the edge. Someone must have an easy fix. Thanks.

Mine's in very tight. I'm not sure how they install that light but I'd hate to mess with it to find out.
Sorry I can't really help other than to say when it's right, it's tight as he11. |
Mine is tight as well. I was debating pulling it out for you but I too am worried that doing it my ruin perfection. Sorry.
Looking at the picture of a new one it appears to have some plastic tabs on the back, not sure if your are borken off. You could try cutting some strips of black duct tape and putting them around the back edge to thicken it up so it may hold. |
Thanks. I figure maybe the vinyl around the light loosened up. I wouldn't want you to mess with it yours if its not falling down. I too assumed there were some tabs in there, but it doesn't appear they were ever there. I'll try some tape.

I don't even have the light :o(
Who ever did my conversion left that one out for somplicity sake (I'm assuming) as with a bunch of other "small" things. Very annoying. I hope you find a way to secure it properly. The Bentley manual doesn't discuss it, someone on this board must have replaced thier's though. Hopefully they'll speak up. Best of luck, Matt |
Hard for me tell exactly from the pictures of the replacement item but perhaps you can compare to see if anything is missing form yours.
Btw-it is $20 for a new from pelican so you could always try a new one. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183521547.jpg |
Wow Jbrand540,
You have the same car combination: '89 Carrera cabrio '01 Audi A6 2.7T (BBS, RS6 spoiler, ipod adapter, silver/black) and a Dodge (Magnum company car) Does your wife drive a Toyota miniVan as well??? |
Wow look at that, good choice in vehicles.
My wife actually uses the Audi had her daily driver and I drive the truck or the Porsche. I am pushing things enough with two vehicles of my own right now. Trying to work on a third though but it will take me a few years of convincing. |
There are two spring loaded metal pins at the ends of the fixture housing that hold the unit in place. Sometimes the pins corrode or get dirty and don't have enough pressure to hold the fixture. Sometime one of the pins will fall out. Check to make sure the pins are present and still have spring tension. A clean and lube might help.
As you noted, the vinyl can pull away from the windshield frame and fold under which keeps the housing from inserting far enough to engage the pins, glue it back if that is the case. As for mine, I had to replace it a few years back due a crack in the housing that caused one of the pins to fall out. So check for cracks too. Good Luck, Andrew |
Swap out the one above your glove box and see if it fits properly.
