Exclamation Hot air at feet

Hey guys,

happy belated 4th of July to you all. My dad and I took the SC out yesterday and had a lot of fun with it. My only concern is that there seems to be hot air blowing out from somewhere above where my feet are (passenger side) and I've noticed it before when I've driven it. However, before, one of the defrost controls was on, and I figured that was the problem. I mean, the air was getting uncomfortably hot. The same thing happened yesterday, only I made sure both of the defrost controls were off and the only way I was able to get slightly cooler air was to turn the A/C to a higher setting. That helped a bit, but frankly, it was hot in the car. We had it on the highway for awhile, which was fun, and it would have been more fun had it not been fairly warm in the car.

I understand that these older 911s are not known for their cold a/c, and I found out from my neighbor that he got the a/c recharged every summer, but even he admitted that it's not fun to drive in the heat of summer.

It seemed the a/c blew fairly cool, at least it was cooler than room temp, which was nice, but again, back to the hot air near my feet. Any idea what would be causing that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The heat vents are right above your feet on both sides of the car. Either you have the heat on (two lever on the floor are up) or the levers are down and the flapper boxes are stuck open.

Damn, you're a trooper for driving around NC in July with the heat on in an air cooled 911. I can barely stand the heat in my car in the winter!

The same thing happened to me and it turned out to be what Kurt V suggested--the flapper box was stuck. I had been under the car cleaning things and must've fiddled with the driver's side one and not noticed that I got it wedged in a sort of half open/half closed position. When I drove the car there was a constant flow of hot air at my feet. A weird sensation--fresh air for the face, sauna for the feet.

One more for the flapper boxes. Here is a picture of a flapperbox. If they are stuck maybe you can open them by hand and leave them open for summer.
Mine were stuck and i just cleaned them and used some grease and all was fine.

Cheers,

Just to clarify- Open means heat is "off"(because it is escaping)
Closed means heat is "on" (because it escapes into the car)

Here's a thread (pay attention to Chris Bennet's post): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=232362&highlight=flapper

In my case, the disc valves that are visible (pictured above) were opening/closing just fine, but evidently, the internal butterfly valves were not closing, as I still had heat coming into the cabin on the passenger side. I need to replace the flapper boxes, but in the meantime, I removed the footwell cover, and capped off the hose (i.e. no heat/defrost on the passenger side). You could also simply stuff a rag into the duct opening (if your car is like my Carrera) that is directly over your feet. I've removed my A/C, so I sure couldn't tolerate any extra heat coming into the cabin during the summer months

ps: Of course, when the weather cools off, I'll remove my "band aid".
