Rear End Noise
 

I have a "clunking" noise on the passenger side rear end on a 1987 911 Cab. Previous postings have led to:

Replacing the sway bar mounts both were damaged.
Replaced the rear sway bar bushings.
Checking the shock absorber and mounts (Ok).
In the process of replacing the bearings (another type of noise altogether).

I do notice that the spring plate is hitting the metal plate bolted to the car when I have the car on jack stands.

Could worn spring plate bushings cause the clunking noise when I hit bumps?

How difficult are they to change? and should I go after the rear trailing arm busings at the same time?

The metal plate bolted to the car has part of the spring plate poking through it. It's perhaps two inches in diamater and maybe three inches is poking out. Look to see if it is still in the center of the plate thingie. With fresh bushings, it would be centered. With old bushings it would not

The spring plate tube is definitely not centered where it comes through the bolt on plate.
Since I am in the process of replacing the rear wheel bearing I should tear into this as well.
Any suggestions or warnings on replacing these bushings?

Take a good look at your transmission and engine mounts. My car had a mysterious clunk for a couple of years even though I had a completely rebuilt suspension system. It turned out to be worn trans mounts. No more clunk. ;)

Also, take a look at that little "shock" on your cab's engine crossmember, aft of the fan. Mine was worn out and useless. So was the rubber donut that sits in the middle of that same crossmember. I think my engine was moving around a little on that crossmember due to the worn rubber donut and "shock".

I ended up replacing the whole thing with a solid unit designed for the Coupe' and Targa.

Is there a way to "check
the trans mount. I am under the car this weekend removing the training arms to replace the bushings. But I am not sure what I am looking for.

grab it and move it around forcefully
