Unhappy Let the smoke out of my alternater

Arg.

This car was running before being shipped to me. The dual batteries were dead to I fitted up a single one on the drivers' side, lots of sparks as I hooked up the ground. The flashers and windsheild wipers were going so I went to the cabin to turn them off. The flashers went off but the wipers wouldnt. Then I noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. I lifted up the tail and smoke and flames were coming from behind the fan. The engine wasn't running, this is just from hooking up a battery...

I pulled off the ground strap and everything calmed down.

Anyone know what the hell happened? The car has been sitting during transport for a few months. The shippers may have tried to jump-start it, but otherwise the electronics werent disturbed since it was running.

I am guessing I need a new alt at least, but any help on why that would have happened or how to be sure I dont fry another?

thanks

Are you absolutely certain you connected the battery properly? Getting sparks as you connected the ground sounds to me like you had the polarity reversed.

Yes, Im sure. The black batt terminal marked - was connected to the body strap. It was sparking quite a bit...like it wanted to weld the terminal to the clamp.

Well, when you have lots of sparking just hooking up a battery ground it is an indication that a circuit is closed and/or a short to ground.

Since the lights and wipers were on , sounds like someone had been fooling with those switches. If it was in transit for months, perhaps the battery was dead and someone tried to jumper it to start/move the car? They may have been unfamiliar with the P- car controls and trying all the switches/knobs?

If they jumped it and then let the alternator try and charge the battery, it possibly fried the alternator and its wiring?
