Path for wire from Engine to Solenoid
 

Hi folks,

I'm hooking up a new CDI to my 82 SC, and am somewhat stumped for a good path from the engine-bay to the solenoid, to get to the always-on 12V. Are there hidden holes in the back of the engine bay I'm not seeing?

Right now I'm considering drilling through the tin at the fan-side of the engine, routing around the engine and getting there, but that does seem to pass awfully close to Very Hot Places...

Why do you require a constant 12v source for the CD box? Isn't it sufficient to have switched 12v only when you want to ignite the engine?

It isn't like a radio with preset memory to maintain.

I assume that you are wiring an MSD or some other after market cd box. When I put the MSD in my SC, I ran the wire from the solenoid into the engine compartment by going between the sheet metal and the rubber seal. I used a piece of rubber fuel line over the wire to help protect it. Maybe not the most elegant solution, but it has worked for the last 3 years or so. Be sure to run the + lead thru a fuse.

Righto on the MSD, it requires unswitched voltage. I've been trying to figure out why, and can only think it may have a brief electronic boot period?

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know about the flexible rubber seal around the engine-tin! Regarding the fuse, the documentation says the MSD has an internal fuse, so fusing is not necessary. Perhaps it's prudent to also throw in a 20A in-line fuse, as its easier to replace?
