Backfire and stall
I have a '74 911 with stock 2.7 and CIS. I've owned the car for a couple of years I don't drive it a lot but I try to get it on the road at least once a week. Up until today it has run perfectly. The weather is beautiful so I decided to take run her to the golf course. After a little warm up she's pulling strongly up a fairly steep hill, halfway up the hill she bucks once. Remainder of the trip is fine, 10 miles. After playing the car starts fine and I'm on my way. Half a mile down the road I get a big backfire and the engine quits-wtf. I get out check everything in the engine bay and everything looks ok. I can here the CIS running with the key on. After 5 min car starts and sounds fine. Another half mile same thing, back fire and engine quits. I get out again lift the metering plate, won't start. Play with this wiggle that and after 15 min car starts, remainder of the trip home is uneventful although its like waiting for the other shoe to drop. When the engine quit it was like some turned the key off. Plenty of juice in the battery, engine spun like a mother. I haven't replaced any of the fuel filters- yet - that's the first thing I'll do , any other suggestions out there. Thanks.

If the car backfires it doesen,t get enough fuel i think. Maybe a fuelpump thats dying ? gets hot and stops working, cools down and works for a while ?
The fuelfilter is alot cheaper i would try that first.

First question, do you have a pop-off valve in the airbox? If so, the backfire could be blowing it open, and it's not reseating properly--resulting in dying engine and no start. The backfire could be from many things, including valve adjustment, fuel mixture, etc. By the way, if you don't have the pop-off valve, get one soon.

I would suspect the coil if it seemed like the car just shut off on it's own.
Check to make sure your coil wire is in the distributor and coil nice and tight. If it was a exhaust back fire I would suspect this even more.

My car died like this when the fuel pump failed.

Check your points, wires, cap and rotor.
Make sure your distributor turns freely. Check the plugin connectors under the steering wheel. Check your fuel pump relay and fuse. Make sure you have gas in the tank. Chck for air leaks.
